Verso of the Albrecht Dürer the Elder portrait», dated 1490; Albrecht Dürer the Elder, 1427–1502, was his father.

Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

Coat of arms of the King Alfonso X of Castile, 1221–1284, 1^st son of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. The order of the quarters is first the castle of his grandmother, Queen Berenguela of Castile, and second the lion of his grandfather, King Alfonso IX of León; however, the other day I discovered that on the map by [Martineau du Plessis, D.; 1700; volume II, illustration 30, page 126], in the shield framed between parallels 37 and 36 and meridians 21 and 22, the lion occupies the 1^st quarter and the castle the 2^nd quarter; that is, their order appears reversed.

Armories of the Wise King of Castile interpreted by me with the following characteristics: the external shape of the coat of arms ends in an ogee arch; the field, the 2 castles, and the 2 lions are outlined and enameled in flat colors; and the texture seems fabric.

This coat of arms, but with a pointed external shape, can be seen in the 2^nd part of the so-called armorial [Wijnbergen; 1265; cuat of arms number 1,289], with the title «Le roy Despaingne», which in this context is understood to refer to Castilla y León.

The 2^nd part of this armorial was made between 1270 and 1285 and, being Alphonse X king of Castile and Leon from 1252 to 1284, it is to Him that the title «Le roy Despaingne» seems to refer.

In [Anonymous; 1800a; page 46] the blazon of «the Zúñigas» is described, where in this book, curiously, the letter Z is ordered after C and before D.

This is the coat of arms of Abdulelah Alyahya (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), designed by Vittorio Gifra (Italy) under his instructions, revised by Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast (Netherlands) and Kevin D. Couling (United Kingdom), and emblazoned by me (Spain). The arms reflect the heritage of the Alyahya family, descendants of the ancient tribe of Beno Tamim (Altamimi) and linked to the modern origins of Saudi Arabia. In an ordinary, I distinguish between engrailed and invected from the ordinary's point of view; for instance, I define a bordure as invected if, from the interior of the bordure, the edge appears invected (meaning the arcs appear concave); conversely, I say a bordure is engrailed if the arcs appear convex from its interior point of view; in this specific case, regarding a line of division, I describe it as engrailed because, from the perspective of the base of the coat of arms, the arcs of the partition line appear convex [Nisbet, A.; 1816; page 21, pictures 1 and 2].

In general, when the dividing lines are diagonal, whether straight or curved, the traditional French terminology is preferred in English. When the dividing lines extend from chief to base and are straight, «Chaussé» ~ «Calzado» designates a partition in the form of a «V», whereas «Chapé» ~ «Cortinado» designates a partition in the form of a caret «^». When these same partitions are drawn with curved lines, the French adjective «ployé», meaning curvilinear, is added, giving «Chaussé ployé» ~ «Calzado curvilíneo», in the form of a «V», and «Chapé ployé» ~ «Cortinado curvilíneo», in the form of a caret «^», following the terminology proposed by [Sanz Lacorte, J.; 2007]. A second family of partitions originates at the centre of the shield. When their dividing lines are straight, the English terms «Party per chevron reversed» ~ «Mantelado en jefe» are used for a partition in the form of a «V» extending from the chief to the centre, whereas «Party per chevron» ~ «Mantelado en punta» designates a partition in the form of a caret «^» extending from the centre to the base, this latter being by far the most common of the partitions described here. When these central partitions are instead drawn with curved lines, the French terminology is again adopted: «Enté en chef» ~ «Entado en jefe» for a curvilinear partition in the form of a «V» extending from the centre towards the chief; «Enté en point» ~ «Entado en punta» for a curvilinear partition in the form of a caret «^» extending from the centre towards the base; «Enté en chef enhanced» ~ «Entado en jefe alzado» when the upper enté begins above the centre, approximately in the upper third of the shield, still forming a «V»; and «Enté en point abased» ~ «Entado en punta caído» when the lower enté begins below the centre, still forming a caret «^». As an additional distinction, «Chapé throughout» ~ «Capa» forms a straight caret «^», touching the chief and descending approximately to the middle of the flanks, whereas «Chapé ployé throughout» ~ «Capa curvilínea» has the same general arrangement and also forms a caret «^», but with curved lines. According to [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 2002; page 85], «entés» originate from the centre of the shield; when «Enté en chef» ~ «Entado en jefe» begins in the upper third of the shield it is described as «Enté en chef enhanced» ~ «Entado en jefe alzado», whereas when «Enté en point» ~ «Entado en punta» begins in the lower third it is described as «Enté en point abased» ~ «Entado en punta caído». Nevertheless, heraldic practice does not always follow this theoretical distinction. For example, the pomegranate representing the Kingdom of Granada in the arms of Spain is almost universally blazoned as «Enté en point» ~ «Entado en punta», although it is neither described as «Enté en point abased» ~ «Entado en punta caído» nor usually depicted as issuing from the exact centre of the shield, but rather from a noticeably lower position.

G0066, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant of Andrea Pompili's arms, whose coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The hand-drawn tree shown in this photograph was originally created for the coat of arms of Andrea Pompili, commissioned by Dr Charles A. Gauci, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta. Some time later, an art collector asked me for a dedicated hand drawing. I chose this tree because its canopy has a distinctive heraldic shape, setting it apart from the other drawings in his collection, as it was specifically designed to fit beneath the two chevronels. This is also the reason for the handwritten note «under a chevron» beside the drawing. Before sending it, I inscribed the sheet with a dedication, which explains the handwritten text visible alongside the artwork.

The federschwert, feder sword, or «feather sword» translated from German, is a training sword developed in the late 15^th century and used during the 16^th century in Renaissance fencing schools. Coat of arms of the Infanta Berenguela of Castile, 1228–1279, 5^th daughter of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

Starting in 1376, the field sown with fleurs-de-lis was replaced by only three fleurs-de-lis. This change took place during the reign of Charles V of France (1338–1380, King of France from 1364 to 1380).

Edward III Plantagenet (1312–1377, King of England from 1327 to 1377) had incorporated the semé of fleurs-de-lis into his arms as a sign of his claim to the French throne, and Henry IV of England (1367–1413, King of England from 1399 to 1413) again changed the semé into three fleurs-de-lis in his own arms.

These three fleurs-de-lis remained in the royal arms of England until George II (1683–1760, King from 1727 to 1760).

They remained in the royal arms of the French kings until their prohibition during the so-called «Hundred Days», that is, from March 20, 1815, the date of Napoleon’s return to Paris from his exile in Elba, until June 28, 1815, the date of the Second Restoration of Louis XVIII as King of France, when they were reinstated. Finally, after the Revolution of 1830, Louis Philippe I of Orléans decreed their abolition by Order of February 10, 1831.

This banner is a recreation of the one appearing in the armorial [Edward IV of England; 1461; row 23, column 2], although in that armorial the banner seems to be associated with Louis IX of France, perhaps because of the prestige of the saintly King of France, whose arms bore a semé of fleurs-de-lis rather than three.

Saint Edward Crown, the fundamental piece used in the anointing ceremony of British monarchs, was reconstructed in 1661 after the Restoration. This crown is distinguished by its four depressed or downward-curving arches, three visible, which rise from a circular base decorated with four cross patty, three visible, alternating with four fleurs de lis, two visible. Like the Tudor, its arches, adorned with pearls, converge at the center to support an orb, a cross on a world. The crown's base is lined with ermine, and the cap or inner lining is traditionally represented in Purpure. It is the heaviest piece among the Crown Jewels and its use is reserved exclusively for the culminating moment of the coronation. The main visual difference between Saint Edward Crown and the Tudor Crown lies in their arches: Saint Edward Crown features depressed arches or downward curves, and its inner cap is typically represented in Purpure. In heraldry, a gazelle springing represents a broader and more dynamic leap than a gazelle salient, since in the springing attitude none of the hooves touch the ground, whereas in the salient attitude the hind legs, usually held close together, remain grounded while propelling the body upward. The English heraldic term «springing» is commonly used to describe a quadruped depicted in mid-leap, with all four legs clear of the ground, since there is no fully established Castilian translation for this heraldic attitude, I translate it as «brincante». The broad and energetic leap of the gazelle reflects Rosalía’s sporting spirit, vitality, and fondness for running and overcoming obstacles. The gazelle bears around its neck the cross designed by Jon Lanzagorta for his co-father-in-law, Mr. Cruz, her father. For this reason the cross is referred to in the blazon as the cross of the Cruz family and is not specifically blazoned in this case, although it could be described as a cross patty whose arms are each formed by three compony pallets Argent, Purpure and Or.

He was the second son of King Henry III of England, and took part in the Ninth Crusade, hence the epithet «Cross on the back».

In 1253 he was appointed Earl of Chester, holding dominion, among others, over the county of Cheshire, but the following year Pope Innocent IV granted him the crown of Sicily, so he ceded his earldom to his elder brother Edward I of England, however, he never came to occupy the throne of Sicily.

The label is an honourable ordinary and also «a kind of mark of cadency, and the most noble of all those used to differentiate the Arms of the younger sons of a House» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 248] and it can likewise be used by the eldest son while his father's arms are still in use, ceasing to bear the label when he inherits his father’s coat. When both the eldest and the second son bear a label, the latter’s label then has more points or is charged with figures to distinguish it.

The label is constructed with «a fillet, which is one-ninth of the width of the chief, with three pendants in the form of carpentry wedges or ill-shaped triangles, joined to it without any line of separation, falling twice as far as the fillet is wide, two placed at the ends and one in the middle, its usual position being in the centre of the chief’s length, without reaching the edges of the shield» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 248].

I have interpreted it from a simplification of the banner appearing in [Edward IV of England; 1461; row 27, 1^st column, final banner], which reflects Edward IV’s aspirations to the throne of Castile and León. In that armorial, this banner is held by a «White Lion of March», which was the personal badge of Edward IV.

Existing seal interpreted by me as follows: the shape of the seal is circular; the motto is written in sable on its outer ring; inside, a seated lion that begins to be rampant and will eventually become so; y the whole rendered in flat sable ink; y the result is an impression in azure ink.

For the outline of the lion I have followed the round seal of the king in his «Charter of Benavente» [Fernando II de León; 1167], in which I consider the lion to be seated; although it could also be interpreted as rampant, or as intending to be so, as it will ultimately appear in the arms of his son, King Alfonso IX of León.

For the delineation of the motto I have followed the round seal of the king in his «Charter of the Alfoz of Benavente» [Fernando II de León; 1181], in which the lion, unlike the previous one, is clearly in a passant posture.

In [Martín Fuertes, J. A.; 2002] four other round seals of King Fernando II of León can be consulted:

• from the year 1160 (A.C. de León, number 4168) with a lion passant,
• from the year 1165 (A.C. de León, number 1041) with another lion passant,

Arms of Gilbert des Essarts, France, emblazoned by me. This scheme (outlined and then in plain tincture) depicts a chevron with a wider, more obtuse angle than usual. This design shows that the chevron is constructed with the side lines forming an angle where the tangent of half the angle is 56.3^o, arctan(3/2), its width is made one-fourth of the shield's overall width, and the position of the chevron's lower point (the apex) is governed by the shield's geometric center, resulting in a visually more open shape than the standard.

This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. This approach is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «Thus, although the State recognizes the coat of arms of an individual as granted/registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, this does not mean that the Chief Herald or indeed the Republic of Malta are also automatically recognizing any title of nobility used by the individual in question. In the United States of America, where arms are commonly assumed, as in Castilian heraldic tradition, rather than formally granted, such arrangements are a matter of family tradition, agreement, and personal decision, rather than enforceable heraldic law. The overall composition of the arms of this extended family is a clear and good example of this approach. It should be noted that the English expression «assumption of arms» does not translate well into Castilian as «asunción de armas», but rather as «adopción de armas», «adoption of arms» a much more accurate and meaningful term. The concept of adoption conveys incorporation into a family: we adopt fundamental bonds, such as a child; deeply personal relationships, such as a companion animal; and also highly symbolic and identity-defining elements, such as a coat of arms.

Existing armories interpreted by me as follows: the shape of the shield is pointed; the field has been enameled in flat azure; the 6 lions are illuminated and cast shadows on the field; and the entire composition has a hammered metal finish.

The shield of Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou is considered the first documented coat of arms in history, dated to 1127, when Henry I of England gifted it to him on the occasion of his marriage to his daughter Matilda of England [The Heraldry Society; 2013].

There is no direct evidence that Henry I possessed a coat of arms, nor that it featured a rampant lion [Humphery-Smith, C.; 1983], but the gift of a shield with 6 lions to his future son-in-law could be an indication of such.

Geoffrey is buried in the Cathedral of Saint Julian in Le Mans, and his tomb is decorated with an enamel depicting him with his shield, where of his 6 lions: 4 are fully visible, and 2 are suggested by their claws.

However, it is possible that both the wedding gift narrative and the enamel on the tomb are from years after his death in 1151, so [Pastoureau, M.; Garvie, F.; 1997; page 18] asserts that «this account was written after Geoffrey's death... and his funerary enamel commissioned by his widow Matilda between 1155 and 1160... therefore it is possible that Geoffrey Plantagenet never had a coat of arms».
