In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

G0076, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Claes Zangenberg's arms, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such grant. This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. This approach is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «Thus, although the State recognizes the coat of arms of an individual as granted/registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, this does not mean that the Chief Herald or indeed the Republic of Malta are also automatically recognizing any title of nobility used by the individual in question. This is the coat of arms of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast. The image above shows the historical illustration as it appears in the «Freiherren-Diploma Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast, 1790, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Königlich-Bayerisches Heroldsamt, Bd. 20-1 nr. 26, Opvallend zijn de onmiskenbare verwijzingen naar het verblijf in de West», which can be consulted on the website juchtervanbergenquast.wordpress.com and below is my current interpretation of this coat of arms. In heraldry there are two kinds of tinctures: colours, for example Gules, Azure, and Sable, and metals, Or and Argent. There is also a heraldic rule of tinctures that states not colour on colour and not metal on metal. The vambraced arm was originally Azure over a Gules field, which is colour on colour and against the rule. I corrected it with the family’s permission by changing the vambraced arm to Argent, so now it is metal Argent on colour Gules, which is correct, and Argent is a good tincture for armory. For this reason, I also used Argent for the helm and for the tips of the tournament spear. The flags also show colour on colour, but they are decorative details and not important, and changing their colours would alter the ship’s nationality, which must remain as it is. It is possible that the Azure we now see originated from the fact that the arm vambraced , the spearheads, and the helm were originally depicted as iron or proper and that over the course of time this natural greyish tone gradually turned into Azure.

Annulet

The circular crown when it is large and in the middle of the shield [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975] is called an annulet. [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 296 and 297] calls it annulet or small annulet depending on its size, if it is large an annulet and if it is small a small annulet. In English and French heraldry it is called «cyclamor» and hence the expression «cyclamor annulet» can also be found.

This annulet is my aesthetic contribution to this imaginary coat of arms as it is normally not represented with this annulet.

Bordure and Orle

In other interpretations the words «non est» go on a bordure or on an orle, the latter being the case blazoned, for example, [Husenbeth, F. C.; 1882; 2^nd appendix] in the following way: «Gules, an orle and pall Argent, conjoined and surmounted of four plates, occupying the dexter and sinister chief and the base and fess points respectively; the first inscribed Pater, the second Filius, and the third Spiritus Sanctus, the centre Deus; the connecting portions of the orle between them having the words non est, and those of the pall est».

The way to elaborate a label can be found in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 248] who writes that «it is made of a fillet, which is the ninth part of the latitude of the Chief with three points in the form of a Carpenter's wedge, or of badly formed triangles, which united to it without separation of lines, fall twice as much, as the fillet is wide, the two being placed at its ends, and one in its middle, its ordinary situation being in the middle of the length of the Chief itself, without reaching the edges of the Shield».

In [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 248 and 249] it is said that «the simple Label is always of three points», as is the case at hand, «but having 4, 5, or 6, which is the greatest number found, it is necessary to specify it», although in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 114] he seems to consider that the maximum is five as he writes «Points, it is said of three, four and up to five points of the Labels».

Coat of arms of Her Excellency Ratu Muda Malka Bas Reuven emblazoned by me with a shape known as a vesica piscis, and with the blazon written in English and Castilian in a structured way to observe the parallelism between both forms. My experience is that if shield shapes are named after countries, this creates problems in an international context. For example, if the shield with a rounded base is called a «Spanish shield», sooner or later someone will point out that the same shape is also used in Portugal, Hungary, or Poland, making it not exclusively Spanish. For this reason, I avoid assigning shield shapes names based on countries or kingdoms and instead give them names that describe their formal characteristics, which is not always easy. For example, I call the «semi-circular shield» in English and «escudo de medio punto» in Castilian to the commonly referred as «Spanish», or the «ogee shield» one that ends in an inverted ogee arch, «conopial» in Castilian. Despite this, at some point, breaking my own rule, I used the term «Bantu» to refer to the almond-shaped shield, only to be quickly corrected and informed of its connection to other African kingdoms. My mistake was not using the name I had always given it: «mandorla» in Castilian and «vesica piscis» in English.

Design rationale

This design combines Byrne, O'Byrne, Ó Broin arms: «Gules, a chevron between three dexter hands apaumée couped at the wrist Argent», with O'Hanlon, Ó hAnluain arms: «Vert, on a mount in base proper, a boar passant Ermine».

These features embody the heraldic adaptation by Gaelic chieftains, integrating ancient tribal symbolism deeply rooted in Celtic mythology and rich local traditions from Wicklow and Armagh.

This design, while combining elements from each and respects this symbolism:

• The layout of the traditional Byrne arms was chosen as the basis for the new arms to reflect the armiger's surname, however, for difference only one of the three dexter hands is employed but in the prime dexter position on the shield and retaining its tinctures. The sinister position has a key to emphasise and reflect the motto «To Thine Own Self Be True» as the essential or key message for one's life, integrity and honesty.
• The base of the shield has the boar taken from the O'Hanlon arms, an ancient symbol of bravery, courage, and tenacity.
• The chevron ermine was chosen to incorporate an element used in various versions of the Byrne and O'Hanlon traditional arms and to reflect the nobility of these two ancient clans/septs who fought long and hard to maintain their independence right up to the XVII century.

In Castilian heraldic tradition, the «adiestrado» ~ «tierce» used in this coat of arms and its symmetrical «siniestrado» ~ «tierce sinister» are «irregular divisions of the field by one line» ~ «particiones irregulares». That is why I use «tierce» and «tierce sinister» in English. There is another possibility, which is to call the «adiestrado» ~ «pale in dexter flank» and the «siniestrado» ~ «pale in sinister flank», thus ceasing to be a type of «divisions of the field» ~ «particiones» and becoming «ordinaries» ~ «piezas fundamentales». This has implications, as the rule of tinctures would apply if it were considered a «pale» ~ «palo». In any case, I will write the blazon in both ways. Alternative blazon: Azure, a dexter arm vested, issuant from sinister, grasping a pilgrim's staff palewise, issuant from base, tied to it a gourd bendwise; on a pale in dexter flank Argent two keys points upwards, in saltire, between in chief an escallop, and in base a mullet of five points environed at dexter by a crescent bendwise azure.

Design rationale

These are canting arms because her surname is «Peregrina» ~ «pilgrim», and her coat of arms depicts the arm of a pilgrim, as she is one herself, with her staff and her gourd for carrying water, advancing towards the dexter, in order to reach the destination of her three most important life pilgrimages: Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Jerusalem. Following [Petra Sancta, S.; 1634; pages 417–418], in seventeenth-century academic emblematics the staff symbolizes the road understood as an intellectual journey, proper to a traveller who appears humble yet is rich in knowledge, while the gourd, which may seem empty, represents the wisdom preserved within it and from which learning ultimately emerges.

This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. The motto over the coat of arms, «Oruganda Rw'Abahinda», means "Clan of Abahinda", and the motto below, «Abazira Nkyende», states that their totemic animal is the monkey. This coat of arms was renewed by the Clan under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and I have had the honour of refining and rendering its design. Harmonising the European rules of heraldry with African expressiveness is no easy task, yet it can yield great results.
