The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

Coat of arms of the city of Almeria, Andalusia, emblazoned by me. In 1147, during the Reconquista, the city of Almería was captured by the forces of King Alfonso VII of León, known as «the Emperor», as part of a broader crusading effort declared by Pope Eugene III. The conquest came in response to the Almohad invasion of 1146, which had begun with a landing in Algeciras and quickly seized key territories in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. In reaction, Alfonso VII negotiated an alliance with the Almoravid leader Ibn Ganiya to organize a resistance. He met with Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, and García Ramírez of Navarre, and together they planned the assault on Almería, which at the time was under Almoravid control. In heraldry, beasts are usually depicted in an aggressive attitude, for example, with gaping jaws, protruding tongue, and visible fangs; in this case, it was the armiger’s wish that his wolf should not display such an aggressive expression; in my interpretation, I deliberately avoided those features of ferocity and instead sought to give the wolf a dignified and imposing look, one that inspires respect rather than open aggressiveness.

There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

The castles came from Castile and the 7 mullet from the bordure of the city of Madrid, they are the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of the Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid the 23th of December 23 of 1983.

Coat of arms of Crepsi, military psychology, former Central Military Region, Kingdom of Spain, where I was stationed during my military service. These arms were designed by my lieutenant colonel and friend Miguel Angel Nuñez Amador, and in this image, they have been emblazoned by me. The Crepsi was a pioneer in its functions: a) the identification of soldiers at psychological risk, among tens of thousands of soldiers, using advanced information systems, including Artificial Intelligence (an area where I contributed during my service in 1989), and b) the evaluation and individualized attention of soldiers at risk through mobile units. The Crepsi has provided trained personnel and methods that are being used for the psychological care of troops deployed to conflict zones and for the psychological care of civilians in massive humanitarian disasters such as terrorist attacks or plane crashes with hundreds of affected people.

Design rationale

The main elements of her arms are the stag and the sabre. The stag symbolizes the reluctance to fight unless provoked. The sabre, resembling a Model 1902 US Army cavalry sabre, is chosen for its significance in both the US Army and the US Air Force. She is a combat veteran who served for 20 years, mostly in humanitarian and medical roles; therefore, the sabre is positioned with its tip towards the heraldic sinister in a non-aggressive attitude. Gules-red is chosen for its association with the military. She continued to serve her brother and sister veterans for another 25 years after her military retirement. Service is very important to her, and it is a value she wishes to pass down to her children and grandchildren, as her motto affirms, «Iustitia per Ministerium», Justice through Service. The yellow rose represents her home state of Texas. The acorn and its rounded leaves of the white oak tree represent Grandmother Oak, a connection with Mother Nature, and independence. Overall, a bald eagle displayed, the symbol of America, is placed on the crest of her arms.

The arms of Geremías Reyes Zelaya express the history of his Honduran family: emigration, work, settlement, prosperity, and inherited values. The fess wavy Azure represents the river and the crossing of the frontier, recalling the family's emigration in search of a better life. The three roundels Gules in chief evoke the family's new settlement, prosperity, and involvement in trade. The mount Vert in base represents the family's rural origins, the mountains, the land, and the cultivation of maize and beans. Design rationale

The arms symbolise the dawn of a new life. The field is tierced per fess to evoke the sky in 3 stages: Sable for the darkness of night, Azure for the horizon at first light, and Sanguine for the rising sun. The 7 stars of Ursa Major, in their traditional arrangement, evoke guidance, constancy, and a Dantesque reference, as the constellation appears in the Divine Comedy. The demi-sun in base, gold upon sanguine, marks the moment of emotional awakening, the dawn of love. The scroll motto «Incipit Vita Nova», the first line of Dante’s Vita Nuova, reflects a personal spiritual transformation. The Azure speaks of eternal loyalty, and the silver stars of purity. The choice of Sanguine, both for the sunlit sky and for the scroll and mantling, is also an homage to Beatrice’s dress as described by Dante at their first encounter. All of the above holds a parallel with the bearer’s personal life, which gives this composition a dual significance, both literary and deeply intimate. The raven as crest, a symbol of memory and intelligence, represents the collector’s spirit and a deep inner life.

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1^st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2^nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower; this area was owned for centuries by the Marquis of Villena and hence the crown of Marquis. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

In heraldry, a gazelle springing represents a broader and more dynamic leap than a gazelle salient, since in the springing attitude none of the hooves touch the ground, whereas in the salient attitude the hind legs, usually held close together, remain grounded while propelling the body upward. The English heraldic term «springing» is commonly used to describe a quadruped depicted in mid-leap, with all four legs clear of the ground, since there is no fully established Castilian translation for this heraldic attitude, I translate it as «brincante». The broad and energetic leap of the gazelle reflects Rosalía’s sporting spirit, vitality, and fondness for running and overcoming obstacles. The gazelle bears around its neck the cross designed by Jon Lanzagorta for his co-father-in-law, Mr. Cruz, her father. For this reason the cross is referred to in the blazon as the cross of the Cruz family and is not specifically blazoned in this case, although it could be described as a cross patty whose arms are each formed by three compony pallets Argent, Purpure and Or.

Design rationale

The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. For the same reason, in Spanish heraldry, some García family coats of arms feature a heron, «garza» in Spanish. The motto «Sic itur ad astra» comes from Virgil's , [Virgil, P.; Century I B.C.; book IX, verse 641], where it is spoken by Apollo to Aeneas's young son Iulus, and it translates to «Thus one journeys to the stars».

Design rationale

When Gomel was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, its coat of arms did not feature a lynx. After the city became part of the Russian Empire in 1772, Empress Catherine II granted Gomel in 1775 to Field Marshal Pyotr Rumyantsev-Zadunaisky, who transferred the administrative centre to the nearby town of Novaya Belitsa. That town was granted a new coat of arms on 16 August 1781, already featuring a lynx, with the decree explaining its inclusion "because there are many of these animals in the vicinity of this town." In 1852, Prince Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich restored Gomel as the district's administrative centre, bringing with it the arms of Novaya Belitsa, which were officially adopted as the coat of arms of Gomel on 23 December 1855.

Proper tinctures can be placed on both color and metal fields. For proper tinctures, the heraldic rule of tincture of colors and metals does not apply. However, contrast remains essential. For instance, an emerald proper on a Vert-green field is heraldically correct, but the green of the emerald will render it nearly invisible against the green field. Whereas the gazelles in the arms of his mother Rosalía Cruz Carballo and sister Julia Íñiguez Cruz were depicted as female, in this case the intention was to represent a male gazelle. For this reason longer horns have been painted and the male sex has been explicitly depicted. In heraldry, the representation of the male sex is common and almost generalized in certain heraldic beasts, especially in animals of strong or combative character such as lions, wolves, or bulls. In more stylized and elegant animals, such as stags or gazelles, such representation is more variable and depends largely on artistic, symbolic, and compositional criteria. In this particular case, I chose to depict it. The gazelle is accompanied by the cross that Jon Lanzagorta designed for his co-father-in-law, Mr. Cruz, the grandfather of Juan Pablo. For this reason the cross is referred to in the blazon as the cross of the Cruz family and is not specifically blazoned in this case, although it could be described as a cross patty whose arms are each formed by three compony pallets Argent, Purpure and Or. Note that the cross is itself a canting symbol, since it is the «cross» ~ «cruz» of the Cruz family. The honour point is a position within the coat of arms located on its central vertical axis, above the center of the shield and below the middle of the chief.

Design rationale

These arms were created for the descendants of Christopher Joseph Parnell Brady and Estella Amelia Arigho. The design is rooted in the traditional Brady Arms, including those recorded by the Ulster King of Arms in Dublin, while the hound’s head draws inspiration from the Arms of Caneggio, the Swiss municipality where the Arigho family originates, represented as Azure with a brach hound’s head couped Argent, but with the tinctures exchanged, painting Azure where it was Argent and vice versa. The number three holds dual significance. On the Brady side, it represents three generations tracing back to the Drumlins of County Cavan, those characteristic rounded hills of the Irish landscape. On the Arigho side, it symbolizes three generations leading to the Alps, represented by the chevron Argent over a Sable field, evoking the snow-capped peaks of the mountains, a nod to the family's Swiss heritage.

The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

Coat of arms of Juan Lanzagorta Aras designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and emblazoned by me. Note that the second quarter begins and ends in Argent; therefore, while the first quarter is properly bendy, having an even number of bands and beginning in Or and ending in Azure, the second is not, as it has an odd number. It is almost impossible to align both quarters so that the wavy bands continue seamlessly from one to the other. Heraldically, such continuity is not required, but artistically it makes much more sense. For this reason, in this case, I chose to prioritize the artistic criterion of continuity, even if the second quarter ends with a small strip of Argent instead of finishing in Azure.
