This is the coat of arms of Abdulelah Alyahya (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), designed by Vittorio Gifra (Italy) under his instructions, revised by Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast (Netherlands) and Kevin D. Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

Regarding this coat of arms and my previous sentence, Joaquim Verde i Llorente tells me: «...or, four pallets gules, besides being the arms of the dynasty of the Counts of Barcelona (first found on a shield of Ramon Berenguer IV, although the proto-heraldic palleted design already appears on the Romanesque tombs of Ermesinda and Ramon Berenguer II), are those of the County of Barcelona / Principality of Catalonia and of the Crown of Aragon. Alfonso Sánchez de Perella, first mayor of Burgos emblazoned by me. He appears as the [Cofradía de Santiago; Century XIV; 4^th knight, 1^st of the page 21 V], from this 14^th century Book of the Brotherhood of Knights of Santiago de la Fuente. This was a brotherhood founded by the Burgos citizens at the time of King Alfonso XI of Castilla, 1311-1350. In the book, there are 14 saltires instead of 16, as it appears that one is missing on the sinister side of the base, and there are 4 in the chief instead of 5.

Design rationale

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1^st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2^nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. The Latin motto "«Res non verba» means «Deeds, not words» emphasizes the importance of actions over mere words.

In heraldry, the word embattled is usually enough, and even more precise terms such as Ghibelline or swallow-tail crenellations already convey a distinctive image. Yet, in this case, what matters most is not the general heraldic convention, but the particular wish of the armiger. For him, the form of the crenellations is essential because it alludes directly to a specific historical castle: Zvolen Castle in central Slovakia, with its alternating swallow-tails and arched voids. To reflect that connection faithfully, the blazon could indeed be refined to read «a chief embattled of Ghibelline crenellations», or even more precisely, «…of alternating swallow-tails and arched voids».

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. This is the coat of arms of Her Royal Highness Doña Leonor Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona, and Princess of Viana, heiress of the throne of Spain as the elder daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. This version of her coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The coat of arms of the Princess of Asturias is the same as her father's, the King, but with a mark of cadency which, in heraldic terms, is also know as brisure. In this case, the cadency mark is a label Azure with three points, which will be removed in due course. The label of three points is the main and most classic of the brisures, usually assigned to the eldest heir. It is said to originate from a piece of cloth the son would tie at the top of his shield to distinguish it from his father's. Other common brisures include the crescent, the mullet of five point, the marlet, the annulet, or the fleur de lis. In addition to these simple brisures, there are also combined brisures, which are brisures charged with another or others. For example, a crescent charged with a fleur de lis. Labels may also have their points charged with other marks. Many cadency systems become more complicated as generations progress and branches open up, so they tend to be rarely used except in very clear cases like this one.

Coat of arms of María Lobo, Lady of the House of Alvito. This coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The arms are traditionally associated with the Lobo family of Alvito and are documented in Castilian and Portuguese heraldic and genealogical sources. These arms were equally used by other members of the House of Alvito, such as Ruy Dias Lobo and his descendants. I have emblazoned this coat of arms at the request of Fernando Durán Cabral de Mello d’Alpoim, as he counts the Lobo lineage of Alvito among his ancestors. It is not necessary to say the arrangement of the wolves which is in saltire, that is, 2, 1 and 2, since it is the default arrangement in heraldry for 5 equal charges.

The coat of arms of Jean-Christophe Loubet del Bayle emblazoned by me. This wolf, being depicted in gules, might have been blazoned as «flayed». In this regard, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; page 187] writes: «A curious term, of the use of which I know only one example, is fleshed or flayed. This, as doubtless will be readily surmised, means that the skin is removed, leaving the flesh gules». Accordingly, it might have been described as «a wolf passant flayed» ~ «un lobo pasante escorchado». [Royal Spanish Academy; 2014] defines the heraldic expression «lobo escorchado» as «lobo de color de gules, que es el que se da a este animal cuando se representa como si estuviera desollado». More generally, [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 2002; page 86, illustrations 511 and 512] defines «escorchado» as «animal desollado o desplumado» and adds that «se le representa siempre de gules», which is not applicable in this case, as it is entirely unrelated to the symbolism of this coat of arms, as is the case with most animals depicted in gules; one may think, for example, of the lion in the arms of Scotland, which is Gules and by no means flayed.

Coat of arms of the Comunidad de Madrid emblazoned by me. In English blazonry, the arrangement of multiple charges is usually described by rows, whereas in Castilian blazonry it is more commonly expressed by columns. However, in this case, as the 7 mullets are placed in chief, it is understood that a horizontal arrangement in 2 rows is the most reasonable solution. For this reason, in both English and Castilian I blazoned the mullets as 4 and 3, that is, 7 mullets arranged in 2 rows, the upper row of 4 mullets and the lower row of 3. It is then the artistic judgement of the heraldic artist to place each of the 3 mullets of the lower row beneath the space between 2 mullets of the upper row, resulting in an overall quincunx arrangement.

Design rationale

The castles came from Castile and the 7 mullet from the bordure of the city of Madrid, they are the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of the Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid the 23th of December 23 of 1983.

Coat of arms of Her Excellency Ratu Muda Malka Bas Reuven emblazoned by me with a shape known as a vesica piscis, and with the blazon written in English and Castilian in a structured way to observe the parallelism between both forms. My experience is that if shield shapes are named after countries, this creates problems in an international context. For example, if the shield with a rounded base is called a «Spanish shield», sooner or later someone will point out that the same shape is also used in Portugal, Hungary, or Poland, making it not exclusively Spanish. For this reason, I avoid assigning shield shapes names based on countries or kingdoms and instead give them names that describe their formal characteristics, which is not always easy. For example, I call the «semi-circular shield» in English and «escudo de medio punto» in Castilian to the commonly referred as «Spanish», or the «ogee shield» one that ends in an inverted ogee arch, «conopial» in Castilian. Despite this, at some point, breaking my own rule, I used the term «Bantu» to refer to the almond-shaped shield, only to be quickly corrected and informed of its connection to other African kingdoms. My mistake was not using the name I had always given it: «mandorla» in Castilian and «vesica piscis» in English.

The coat of arms of the Marquis Prato di Arnesano, requested by Andrea Tamburelli Lanzara di Pietragavina and painted by me. Vair is a fur, and furs are repetitive combinations of a metal and a color. In the case of vair, the metal is Argent and the color is Azure. Because they simultaneously include both a metal and a color, furs are exempt from the rule of tincture, as they would inevitably violate it, either through their metal or color component. In this coat of arms, the pallets of vair lies on a field of metal Or, and it might be thought that the metal Argent in the vair breaks the rule. However, as mentioned, the rule of tincture does not apply to furs due to their dual nature.
