The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

Alfonso Sánchez de Perella, first mayor of Burgos emblazoned by me. He appears as the [Cofradía de Santiago; Century XIV; 4^th knight, 1^st of the page 21 V], from this 14^th century Book of the Brotherhood of Knights of Santiago de la Fuente. This was a brotherhood founded by the Burgos citizens at the time of King Alfonso XI of Castilla, 1311-1350. In the book, there are 14 saltires instead of 16, as it appears that one is missing on the sinister side of the base, and there are 4 in the chief instead of 5.

This coat of arms has been created by the family, combining the tower with a turret of the ancient arms of the lineage Ormazabal of the Basque Country, but with different tinctures, with a wyvern referring to the dragon issuing from the port of a castle in the ancient arms of the lineage Lazaro of Aragon. The Latin motto "«Res non verba» means «Deeds, not words» emphasizes the importance of actions over mere words.

There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

He bore his father's arms, replacing the lion Purpure of the Kingdom of León with a cross flory Purpure, likely due to his close association with the Order of Calatrava, whose emblem is a cross flory Gules. However, he retained the metal Argent field in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters and the lion's purple color, suggesting this was more of a conceptual change than a quartering by alliance with the Order of Calatrava.

My experience is that if shield shapes are named after countries, this creates problems in an international context. For example, if the shield with a rounded base is called a «Spanish shield», sooner or later someone will point out that the same shape is also used in Portugal, Hungary, or Poland, making it not exclusively Spanish. For this reason, I avoid assigning shield shapes names based on countries or kingdoms and instead give them names that describe their formal characteristics, which is not always easy. For example, I call the «semi-circular shield» in English and «escudo de medio punto» in Castilian to the commonly referred as «Spanish», or the «ogee shield» one that ends in an inverted ogee arch, «conopial» in Castilian. Despite this, at some point, breaking my own rule, I used the term «Bantu» to refer to the almond-shaped shield, only to be quickly corrected and informed of its connection to other African kingdoms. My mistake was not using the name I had always given it: «mandorla» in Castilian and «vesica piscis» in English.

The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The motto «Patiens quia aeternus» ~ «Patient because eternal» comes from Augustine of Hippo and reinforces the meaning of this coat of arms.

The creation of these arms has been guided by Kevin Larkin's life journey, connecting Ballinasloe, Dublin, London, and Alicante. Drawing inspiration from the heraldry of Ballinasloe, the armiger's hometown, and Alicante, his current residence, the design reflects significant elements from both places. Ballinasloe's arms feature a triple-towered castle, symbolizing the O Ceallaigh's historic stronghold and the area's legal traditions. Similarly, Alicante's arms prominently display a triple-towered castle, making it a natural unifying element for the design. The wavy lines represent the River Suck and River Shannon in Ireland above, and the Mediterranean Sea below. The oak tree laden with acorns Or in the first quarter symbolizes the family's fertility. The oak and the domed tower in the second quarter, in their transformed forms, are elements from the coat of arms of the Simon lineage, which they represent. The third quarter derives from the arms of the Faus family and represents it. The plain cross in the fourth quarter is a symbol of Christ and of Aragon. The Latin motto reads: «Strong as Iron».

Design rationale

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. The tinctures of Vert, Argent and Gules, shown in the port and windows of the castle, are also a hint to where they spent their honeymoon. The language of the motto, Latin, was chosen to represent the shared Latin heritage of the couple. The meaning of the motto «Amor Non Timet» is a powerful statement in itself and represents the strength of the commitment, the love and bond shared between them.

In heraldry, there are two types of tigers with specific names in both English and Castilian: the «tyger» in English I call «tigre heráldico» in Castilian, and the «tiger» in English I refer to as «tigre» in Castilian, omitting the Bengal qualifier that some authors use for the natural tiger. According to [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; page 191, figures 322-325], the differences between these two representations are significant. The «tyger», or «tigre heráldico», is a fantastical animal, created from the imagination of medieval artists who were unfamiliar with the real animal but knew of its existence through distant descriptions. This heraldic tyger has a body resembling that of the natural tiger, but with a mane like that of a lion, a tufted tail, and a peculiar head that looks more like a wolf than a natural tiger. Additionally, it lacks the characteristic stripes of the Bengal tiger. Recall that the heraldic panther is also an example of a fantastical animal, breathing fire from its nose and ears and covered in colorful spots. On the other hand, the natural «tiger», identified as the «Bengal tiger» by [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; page 191, figures 324-325], appears in heraldry later and is a more realistic depiction of the animal as it exists in nature.

The coat of arms of Markus Hermann Frank features a Franconian Rake, a heraldic reference to his surname, making this a case of canting arms. The Franconian Rake is the historical emblem of the Franconia region in Germany, traditionally blazoned as per fess dancetty of three points Gules and Argent. He is a Medical Doctor and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, which is reflected in the two fleams, surgical instruments historically used in medicine.
