Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

Regarding this coat of arms and my previous sentence, Joaquim Verde i Llorente tells me: «...or, four pallets gules, besides being the arms of the dynasty of the Counts of Barcelona (first found on a shield of Ramon Berenguer IV, although the proto-heraldic palleted design already appears on the Romanesque tombs of Ermesinda and Ramon Berenguer II), are those of the County of Barcelona / Principality of Catalonia and of the Crown of Aragon. Alfonso Sánchez de Perella, first mayor of Burgos emblazoned by me. He appears as the [Cofradía de Santiago; Century XIV; 4^th knight, 1^st of the page 21 V], from this 14^th century Book of the Brotherhood of Knights of Santiago de la Fuente. This was a brotherhood founded by the Burgos citizens at the time of King Alfonso XI of Castilla, 1311-1350. In the book, there are 14 saltires instead of 16, as it appears that one is missing on the sinister side of the base, and there are 4 in the chief instead of 5.

Coat of arms of the city of Almeria, Andalusia, emblazoned by me. In 1147, during the Reconquista, the city of Almería was captured by the forces of King Alfonso VII of León, known as «the Emperor», as part of a broader crusading effort declared by Pope Eugene III. The conquest came in response to the Almohad invasion of 1146, which had begun with a landing in Algeciras and quickly seized key territories in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. In reaction, Alfonso VII negotiated an alliance with the Almoravid leader Ibn Ganiya to organize a resistance. He met with Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, and García Ramírez of Navarre, and together they planned the assault on Almería, which at the time was under Almoravid control. Crucial to the success of the operation was the support of the powerful Genoese navy, as well as French crusaders who had responded to the papal call. In heraldry, beasts are usually depicted in an aggressive attitude, for example, with gaping jaws, protruding tongue, and visible fangs; in this case, it was the armiger’s wish that his wolf should not display such an aggressive expression; in my interpretation, I deliberately avoided those features of ferocity and instead sought to give the wolf a dignified and imposing look, one that inspires respect rather than open aggressiveness.

That way it would be clearer that the sword is both held and supported, although at the cost of a longer and more complex blazon.

The visible drawing corresponds to the final version, while a first earlier version can be seen beneath it through the translucent paper. This reflects my usual working method: I draw directly in ink, without a preliminary pencil sketch, using long continuous strokes and lifting the pen as little as possible. I work on successive sheets of tracing paper, one laid over another, refining the drawing from one version to the next until I reach a result that satisfies me. The first attempt is rarely successful; the stronger drawings usually emerge in the second or third version, sometimes the fourth, and occasionally after more iterations.

The hurt represents what is known as the Good Raft, a symbol of the town and its people, it is a circular cistern of 40 meters in diameter of Roman origin, and the Maltese cross is a symbol of its connection since 1188 to the Royal Monastery of Sijena of Hospitaller nuns of the Order Malta.

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1^st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2^nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. In English, the shaft of the column is treated as the primary element, and the tinctures of the base and capital are then specified. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Therefore, if a blazon mentions a mullet without further detail, the artist must depict it with five points. Conversely, in Castilian heraldry, stars are conventionally represented with six points by default. When a five-pointed mullet appears in an English blazon, it is mandatory to specify the number of points in the Castilian version of the blazon, as in this case.

Design rationale

The castles derive from Castile, and the 7 mullets come from the bordure of the city of Madrid; they represent the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid on December 23, 1983. Regarding the symbolism of this coat of arms, José Manuel Huidobro told me: «Each star has five points representing the five provinces surrounding Madrid: Ávila, Segovia, Guadalajara, Cuenca, and Toledo. The castles embody the most characteristic symbol of Castile. Both neighboring communities, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León, display them in their coats of arms. The fact that they are paired symbolizes the Community of Madrid’s claim to serve as a link between the two Castiles». He includes the coat of arms of the Comunidad de Madrid in his book [Huidobro Moya, J. M.; 2024; page 214].

This is my interpretation of the coat of arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain. In the execution of this coat of arms it was necessary to choose between different design alternatives, such as retaining the oval shape of the central inescutcheon as opposed to a Spanish form, which I prefer to describe as having a semicircular base, both shapes being compatible with the official blazon; from a strictly heraldic point of view, the most correct solution would be for the outer shape of the central inescutcheon to match that of the shield itself, meaning that in this case the inescutcheon should also end in a semicircular base, but the oval inescutcheon is so widely used in ministries, official buildings, and even within the Royal Household itself, that I decided to keep it oval; likewise, there is no fixed rule regarding the number of claws of the lion, as it is often depicted with three claws and at other times with four, the former perhaps being the more primitive convention and the latter the more naturalistic one, and I prefer to depict it with four, since with only three claws the lion appears to me to be less fierce.

The ancient arms of the family Tamburelli, Lords of Pietra Gravina, as used by Don Eugenio Ugo Augusto Tamburelli, emblazoned by me. In Italy, numerous coats of arms bear an eagle displayed Sable on a chief Or, clearly derived from the imperial arms «Or, an eagle displayed Sable». These chiefs, known as the «capo dell’Impero», originated in the context of the Guelph and Ghibelline conflicts, being adopted by supporters of the Holy Roman Empire as a sign of allegiance, the Ghibelline. In the case of Pietragavina, the reference is particularly significant, as the site is recorded in an imperial diploma of Frederick Barbarossa (1164), thus indicating a direct historical connection with imperial authority, which may well justify the presence of such an augmentation in the arms.

Design rationale

The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The motto «Patiens quia aeternus» ~ «Patient because eternal» comes from Augustine of Hippo and reinforces the meaning of this coat of arms.

This design shows that the chevron is constructed with the side lines forming an angle where the tangent of half the angle is 56.3^o, arctan(3/2), its width is made one-fourth of the shield's overall width, and the position of the chevron's lower point (the apex) is governed by the shield's geometric center, resulting in a visually more open shape than the standard.

In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In heraldry there are two kinds of tinctures: colours, for example Gules, Azure, and Sable, and metals, Or and Argent. There is also a heraldic rule of tinctures that states not colour on colour and not metal on metal. The vambraced arm was originally Azure over a Gules field, which is colour on colour and against the rule. I corrected it with the family’s permission by changing the vambraced arm to Argent, so now it is metal Argent on colour Gules, which is correct, and Argent is a good tincture for armory. For this reason, I also used Argent for the helm and for the tips of the tournament spear. The flags also show colour on colour, but they are decorative details and not important, and changing their colours would alter the ship’s nationality, which must remain as it is. It is possible that the Azure we now see originated from the fact that the arm vambraced , the spearheads, and the helm were originally depicted as iron or proper and that over the course of time this natural greyish tone gradually turned into Azure.

Coat of arms of María Lobo, Lady of the House of Alvito. This coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The arms are traditionally associated with the Lobo family of Alvito and are documented in Castilian and Portuguese heraldic and genealogical sources. These arms were equally used by other members of the House of Alvito, such as Ruy Dias Lobo and his descendants. I have emblazoned this coat of arms at the request of Fernando Durán Cabral de Mello d’Alpoim, as he counts the Lobo lineage of Alvito among his ancestors. It is not necessary to say the arrangement of the wolves which is in saltire, that is, 2, 1 and 2, since it is the default arrangement in heraldry for 5 equal charges.
