Canting arms of the family of Paul and Kari Herndon, based on the arms of their lineage, and emblazoned by me. In heraldic blazoning, a tincture normally applies to all subsequent elements until another tincture is specified. This may be regarded as a kind of «backward propagation rule», whereby the final mention of a tincture is understood to qualify all the immediately preceding elements to which it can logically apply. This convention avoids unnecessary repetition, producing shorter, more concise blazons without any loss of precision. For example, the blazon «Argent, a heron volant Azure, beaked and membered Sable between three escallops Sable» already means that both the beak and the legs of the heron are Sable. Repeating the tincture «beaked Sable and membered Sable» is therefore unnecessary. In Castilian, however, I often add clarifying quantifiers such as «both» ~ «ambos de» when 2 elements share the same tincture, and «all» ~ «todo de» when there are more than 2 elements, as this generally improves readability without altering the meaning.
