Eugene McCarthy, sealed

Argent, a stag trippant Gules, attired and hoofed Sable, standing on a terrace in base Vert charged with a fess Or; on a chief Sable, three geese volant contourné Argent. Motto: «An Garraí Dubh go Brách» Sable, with initial letters Gules, over a scroll Argent.

Design rationale

  • The stag trippant Gules came from the arms of the MacCarthy clan, also transcribed as McCarthy, but for difference attired and hoofed Sable, this Sable reflecting the peat-coloured soil of Gerryduff.
  • The chief Sable also from Garryduff, called «An Garraí Dubh» in Irish, which means «the black garden», referring to the peat-coloured dark soil; it is the home place of Eugene McCarthy and his family for generations.
  • The three geese volant Argent from the local parish of Monagae, «the bogland of the geese», and they are flying to sinister as the Irish people from the US return to their Ireland, flying east across the Atlantic Ocean, this symbolism also evokes the famous «Wild Geese» Irish of previous centuries who emigrated to mainland Europe and further afield to serve in the armies of France, Spain, and Austria, many of the name McCarthy included.
  • A terrace in base Vert with a fess Or because these are the colours of the local GAA* football and hurling club, established in 1896, GAA means Gaelic Athletic Association.
  • And the motto «An Garraí Dubh go Brách» means «Garryduff Forever».

Escudo de plata, una garza volante de azur, picada y membrada, acompañada de tres veneras todo de sable. Lema: «Sic itur ad astra».

Arms emblazoned by me, highlighted with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a pointed outer contour and with a rough finish.

Canting arms of the family of Paul and Kari Herndon, based on the arms of their lineage, and emblazoned by me.

Design rationale

The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. For the same reason, in Spanish heraldry, some García family coats of arms feature a heron, «garza» in Spanish. The motto «Sic itur ad astra» comes from Virgil's , [Virgil, P.; Century I B.C.; book IX, verse 641], where it is spoken by Apollo to Aeneas's young son Iulus, and it translates to «Thus one journeys to the stars».

The upper part of the image presents the finished digital rendering, including the coat of arms and crest in their final painted form. The translucent tracing paper visible beneath shows two hand-drawn versions of the mountain bluebird used during the design process, the second drawn over the first. As may be observed, some elements of the final mountain bluebird, particularly the rear tail feathers, were completed digitally after the hand-drawn stage.
