Argent, a lion rampant Purpure, armed and langued Gules. Crest: An open royal crown Or.

Escudo de plata, un león rampante de púrpura, armado y lampasado de gules. Timbrado de una corona real abierta.

Arms of the King interpreted as follows: the escutcheon is finished in a semi-circular arch; both the field, the lion, and the crown of the crest have been illuminated; and the ensemble has a hammered metal finish.

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

Arms emblazoned by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with an ogee external shape and with a rough finish.

Design rationale

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

Cavalry Regiment Alcantara, royal crown

Argent, a cross of Alcantara. Crest: A closed royal crown Or, with eight arches, visible five. Motto: «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol».

Escudo de plata, una cruz de Alcántara. Timbrado de una corona real cerrada. Lema: «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol».

Coat of arms interpreted in the following manner: the shape of the shield is of a semicircular arch; the field is illuminated in metal Argent; the cross of Alcantara is outlined in Sable and illuminated in Vert; the royal crown is closed, outlined in Sable and illuminated with the metal Or, Argent for the pearls, Azure and Or for the orb, Gules and Vert for the gems, Gules for the inner cloth, and Sable for the visible hollow at its base; and the whole has a slightly hammered metal finish.

Regiment's Motto

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

  • Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
  • On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
  • Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Regimental Motto

The Latin motto «In hoc signo vinces» is translated as «In this sign, you shall conquer».

Coat of Arms of Ugnius Mikucionis in Twelve Lineages

Coat of arms of Ugnius Mikucionis, Twelve Lineages

Publication of my interpretation of the arms of Ugnius Mikucionis, on the blog Twelve Lineages of Soria with the article titled: The eminent heraldist Mr. Antonio Salmerón Cabañas interprets the coat of arms of Ugnius Mikucionis (Lithuania and Norway).

Blazon in Spanish by Alfonso de Ceballos-Escalera y Gila, Chronicler of Arms of Castile and León, from his certification of arms: «Vert, a Latin cross made of a wooden staff, raguly, from whose sinister flank issues a leafy branch that encircles the cross from above and entwines over its base, all Or. Crested with a steel helmet affronty, torse Or and Vert, with mantling Vert doubled Or. For crest, the same raguly Latin cross, branched and leafed, Or, placed before two wings Vert».

Blazon in English by The South African Bureau of Heraldry, from its certification of arms: «Vert, a wooden staff, its upper end terminating in a Latin cross, raguly, couped at random, issuant from its sinister nombril point a leaved offshoot encircling the cross, its end terminating and debruising the lower limb Or. Crest: In front of a pair of wings displayed Vert, a wooden staff issuant, its upper end terminating in a Latin cross, raguly, couped at random, issuant from its sinister nombril point a leaved offshoot encircling the cross, its end terminating and debruising the lower limb Or. Wreath and mantling: Vert and Or». I do not agree with the specification of the exact place of origin of the branch, the «nombril point» ~ «navel», because that point of origin does not distinguish this coat of arms from another where the branch could emerge at a different height, either closer or further from the point of the shield, and because it forces the artistic interpretation to either break the rule of fullness or to draw a curved branch in a panache shape to allow it to open before gaining height.

Note how in the Spanish certification of arms, by the Chronicler of Arms of Castile and León, this unnecessary nombril specification as the origin point of the branch is omitted.

The nombril is the exact crossing point of the vertical axis of symmetry of the shield with the lower edge of the bend.

Canting arms of Gian Carlo Onida, Alessandria, emblazoned by me. «Crescent reversed» means that the points of the crescent are directed toward the base of the shield. The crescent of these arms is a historical charge Argent placed on a field Or; metal over metal, in Italian heraldic terminology this is described as «cucito» ~ in French and English «cousu» ~ in Spanish «cosido». In Castilian heraldry it is not necessary to specify the number of points of the mullet, since the default value is 6. In English heraldry it is mandatory to specify «mullet of six points», as the default number of points is 5. An «eradicated tree» implies visible roots.

Arms painted by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with a pointed external shape and with a rough finish.

Design rationale

The fox refers to the clever and resourceful character attributed to the armiger’s family. The federschwert evokes his dedication to Historical European Martial Arts, in particular the German school of Liechtenauer and the long sword. The oak leaves have a double meaning: they symbolize nature and spirituality, linked to his belonging to the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and being nine in number they allude to his Irish heritage and the legendary figure of Niall of the Nine Hostages. His ancestry includes Irish, English and German roots, the latter once again connected to the sword. The motto translates as «Clever, Caring, Witty».

Coat of arms depicted by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a semi-circular outer contour and with a leather finishing.

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

Coat of arms depicted by me, highlighted with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with a pointed outer contour and with a leather finishing.

This is his coat of arms Vitéz László Gábor emblazoned by me. Per fess is the horizontal division into two parts, and per pale is the vertical division into two; therefore, per fess and per pale in base means that the shield is first divided horizontally, with the upper part as the first quarter, and the lower part is then divided vertically into two, forming the second and third quarters. The heraldic crescent is a moon with its horns pointing upward (to chief); to distinguish it from the natural crescent moon, in Spanish heraldry it is called «creciente tornado», while in English the equivalent term is increscent. The Castilian «filiera» is a narrow bordure, thinner than the ordinary one; in English it has no specific name and is usually referred to simply as a bordure, or rarely as a diminished bordure or fillet bordure. In the crest, fimbriated and barred Or indicates that the border details and grill-bars of the helm are gold, while lined refers to its interior, here Gules.

«Armas antigas» ~ ancient arms of family d’Alpoim, originally from France, emblazoned for Fernando Durán Cabral de Mello d’Alpoim by me according to his instructions and based, except for the cry, on descriptions from armorials such as «Nobiliário da Ilha Terceira» by Eduardo de Campos de Castro de Azevedo Soares, «Pedatura Lusitana», on the noble families of Portugal, by Cristóvão Alão de Morais, the chapter «O Solar dos Alpoins» by A. Nogueira Gonçalves, or «Armaria Portuguesa» that describes it in Portuguese «De azul, cinco flores de lis de oiro. In this version, the text of the cry «:Notra:Dama:Dallpoy:» is based on a d’Alpoim's armorial stone and represents a Portuguese evolution of the original French cry «Notre Dame du Puy», which is the name of the Cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay, France.

Design rationale

The Promet family are the founders and owners of Promet Restoration, a company devoted to the preservation and restoration of fine pianos, antique furniture, and historic wooden artefacts, prometrestoration.com. Their tradition began in 1983 at the National Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, under the mentorship of Ülo Ots, son of the renowned opera singer Georg Ots. Founded in San Francisco in 1989 and later established in Seattle, Promet Restoration has since restored more than four hundred Steinway pianos and countless heirloom pieces. The company’s mission «To preserve the heirlooms for generations to come» embodies both artistic integrity and respect for craftsmanship. The arms combine Estonian heraldic inspiration with the form of dovetail joints, a symbol of precision and enduring workmanship, as used in the crafting of pianos and fine furniture. The motto «Per Aspera ad Astra», meaning «Through difficulties to the stars», is replaced, in the version used for their company Promet Restoration, by the corporate motto «Quality & Integrity · Est. 1989».

Escudo cuartelado: 1o y 4o de gules, un castillo de oro, aclarado de azur, mazonado de sable; 2o y 3o de plata, un león rampante de púrpura, armado y lampasado de gules.

A symbolic image representing, through 3 coats of arms, the creation of the coat of arms of the King Ferdinand III the Saint from the arms of Alfonso IX, King of León, and Berenguela, Queen of Castile. The shapes of all three shields are rounded; all their components are illuminated; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

Ferdinand III the Saint was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. During his reign, the crowns of Castile and León were united forever. When, in 1230, Ferdinand III succeeded his father, he adopted a quarterly coat of arms, placing his mother's arms, the castle, in the 1st and 4th quarters, and his father's arms, the lion, in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. His goal was likely to achieve balance between the two kingdoms and to give his coat of arms a greater sense of continuity over time compared to impaled arms. The coat of arms of Ferdinand III the Saint was the first quarterly shield in history, and the idea spread into the heraldry of Spain and other kingdoms, such as Aragon-Sicily, Brabant, England, Navarre, and Bohemia.

Registered by The International Register of Arms, 1st of December of 2022, Registration number 0690, Volume 4.

In Spanish heraldry, there are three terms for supporters: «sostenes» for objects or plants, «tenantes» for human figures, and «soportes» for animal forms. The following applies to sostenes, tenantes, and soportes. Unlike other heraldic traditions such as English heraldry, in Spanish heraldry there are no rules for the use of supporters; their use is at the armiger's discretion, without specific restrictions. Supporters are not reserved only for nobility; their use is free for all.

In the words of [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 173] «there is no rule that determines the use of tenantes, soportes, and sostenes».

R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In some cases, this may be due to the fact that some holders of Maltese titles of foreign origins, opt to follow the heraldic rules of the country which granted the original title. In other case it appears to rest purely on the whims of the title-holder. The Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta will normally choose to display coronets of rank immediately above the shield but will not stand in the way of family tradition should there be a preference for the coronet to be displayed elsewhere in the Arms. However, a titular coronet, unlike a crest coronet (see below), must never be placed above a wreath or be separated from the helm by a fold of mantling. This would reduce its status to that of a crest coronet».

This is the coat of arms of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast. The image above shows the historical illustration as it appears in the «Freiherren-Diploma Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast, 1790, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Königlich-Bayerisches Heroldsamt, Bd. 20-1 nr. 26, Opvallend zijn de onmiskenbare verwijzingen naar het verblijf in de West», which can be consulted on the website juchtervanbergenquast.wordpress.com and below is my current interpretation of this coat of arms. In heraldry there are two kinds of tinctures: colours, for example Gules, Azure, and Sable, and metals, Or and Argent. There is also a heraldic rule of tinctures that states not colour on colour and not metal on metal. The vambraced arm was originally Azure over a Gules field, which is colour on colour and against the rule. I corrected it with the family’s permission by changing the vambraced arm to Argent, so now it is metal Argent on colour Gules, which is correct, and Argent is a good tincture for armory. For this reason, I also used Argent for the helm and for the tips of the tournament spear. The flags also show colour on colour, but they are decorative details and not important, and changing their colours would alter the ship’s nationality, which must remain as it is. It is possible that the Azure we now see originated from the fact that the arm vambraced , the spearheads, and the helm were originally depicted as iron or proper and that over the course of time this natural greyish tone gradually turned into Azure.

Or, a cross of Calatrava. Crest: An open royal crown Or.

Escudo de oro, una cruz de Calatrava. Timbrado de una corona real abierta.

Coat of arms interpreted as follows: the shield's shape is a semicircular arch; the field is illuminated in metal Or; the cross of Calatrava is outlined in Sable and illuminated in Gules; the royal crown is open, outlined in Sable and illuminated in metal Or, pearls in Argent, gemstones in Gules and Vert, and the visible base hollow in Sable; and the entire piece has a slightly hammered metal finish.

The municipality of Jamilena belongs to the La Campiña region and is the smallest in the province of Jaén. I have depicted its coat of arms with an open royal crown, but representations with a closed royal crown can also be found.

The origin of the cross of Calatrava in its heraldic coat of arms dates back to the year 1525 when Emperor Charles V issued several decrees from Toledo to build a convent for nuns in Jamilena. For the construction of this convent, stones from the Muslim castle, which was reformed and occupied by the Order of Calatrava, were used.

Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain, emblem

Emblem, two two-handed swords in saltire Argent, hilted Or. Crest: A royal crown Or.

Emblem, two two-handed swords in saltire Argent, hilted Or. Crest: A royal crown Or.

Emblema, dos mandobles en sotuer de plata, guarnecidos de oro. Timbrado de una corona real.

Emblem interpretation with: the two-handed swords placed along the diagonals of an imaginary rectangle, with a 5x6 proportion, like a shield, that is, with angles of 50.2°, between the axis of the two-handed swords and the imaginary base of the emblem, unlike the original emblem where the two-handed swords are on the diagonals of a square, therefore with angles of 45°; the two-handed swords and the closed royal crown are outlined in Sable, illuminated and the whole with a raised-stroke execution.

This emblem of the Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain has 2 two-handed swords that, unlike usual swords, due to their great length and weight, their fencing must be two-handed, hence their name.

The Spanish word «mandoble» comes from «mano doble», meaning «double hand», and refers to a sword wielded with both hands, the equivalent of the English «two-handed sword».

It is known that they are two-handed swords because the 2 that appear in the emblem have a crescent or crossguard in their iron. This crescent is called in Castilian «falsaguarda» and also «ganchos de parada» and its functionality is to protect from the slashes that the opponent could give close to the blade of the two-handed sword.
