Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. This approach is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «Thus, although the State recognizes the coat of arms of an individual as granted/registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, this does not mean that the Chief Herald or indeed the Republic of Malta are also automatically recognizing any title of nobility used by the individual in question. The coat of arms of Gregorio Lanzagorta Llaguno, harbor of San Blas, and cigar maker in Nayarit, Mexico. This coat of arms was designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and painted by me in 3 steps: 1) outlined, 2) plain colors and metals, and 3) lights and shadows. The heraldic terms «gavilla» ~ «garb» in Castilian and English. Note that the English term «sheaf» also corresponds to the Castilian «gavilla». At first, I thought I remembered that in Castilian this sheaf of tobacco had the very specific name «tonga», and that is why I initially used «tonga de tabaco» ~ «tobacco sheaf». But I discovered that «tonga» is a more local than general term, [Real Academia Española; 2014] «Canarias y Cuba: Pila o porción de cosas apiladas en orden», so «tonga» is not as general as I believed, and therefore I moved on to use «gavilla de hojas de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco leaves», although this is somewhat long, and moreover the words «hojas» and «leaves» are redundant, since these sheaves are only made of leaves—just as wheat sheaves are always made of ears, so one does not say a sheaf of wheat ears. That is why I finally use for the blazon «gavilla de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco» in Castilian and English, respectively.

Canting arms of Jan Bobor, Slovakia, emblazoned under his directions. In heraldry, the word embattled is usually enough, and even more precise terms such as Ghibelline or swallow-tail crenellations already convey a distinctive image. Yet, in this case, what matters most is not the general heraldic convention, but the particular wish of the armiger. For him, the form of the crenellations is essential because it alludes directly to a specific historical castle: Zvolen Castle in central Slovakia, with its alternating swallow-tails and arched voids. To reflect that connection faithfully, the blazon could indeed be refined to read «a chief embattled of Ghibelline crenellations», or even more precisely, «…of alternating swallow-tails and arched voids».

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

In Castilian heraldic tradition, the «adiestrado» ~ «tierce» used in this coat of arms and its symmetrical «siniestrado» ~ «tierce sinister» are «irregular divisions of the field by one line» ~ «particiones irregulares». That is why I use «tierce» and «tierce sinister» in English. There is another possibility, which is to call the «adiestrado» ~ «pale in dexter flank» and the «siniestrado» ~ «pale in sinister flank», thus ceasing to be a type of «divisions of the field» ~ «particiones» and becoming «ordinaries» ~ «piezas fundamentales». This has implications, as the rule of tinctures would apply if it were considered a «pale» ~ «palo». In any case, I will write the blazon in both ways. Alternative blazon: Azure, a dexter arm vested, issuant from sinister, grasping a pilgrim's staff palewise, issuant from base, tied to it a gourd bendwise; on a pale in dexter flank Argent two keys points upwards, in saltire, between in chief an escallop, and in base a mullet of five points environed at dexter by a crescent bendwise azure.

Design rationale

These are canting arms because her surname is «Peregrina» ~ «pilgrim», and her coat of arms depicts the arm of a pilgrim, as she is one herself, with her staff and her gourd for carrying water, advancing towards the dexter, in order to reach the destination of her three most important life pilgrimages: Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Jerusalem. Following [Petra Sancta, S.; 1634; pages 417–418], in seventeenth-century academic emblematics the staff symbolizes the road understood as an intellectual journey, proper to a traveller who appears humble yet is rich in knowledge, while the gourd, which may seem empty, represents the wisdom preserved within it and from which learning ultimately emerges.

In Castilian, the lion and the leopard are the same heraldic animal, which is referred to by one name or the other depending on its attitude: a) The lion is shown in profile and rampant, as in the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Spain. b) The leopard is passant and guardant, faces the observer, as in the coat of arms of the Kingdom of England. c) The «león leopardado» is shown in profile like the lion, but is passant like the leopard, as in the arms of the family of Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg. d) The «león leopardado» is guardant like the leopard, but is rampant like the lion; this is the case with the supporters of this coat of arms. The conclusion drawn from the four points above is that the direction of the gaze takes precedence over the posture of the body: when is guardant it is termed a leopard, and when it is shown in profile it is termed a lion.

Emblem interpreted by me as follows: an oval shape with proportions 5x6, wider than the original; the field illuminated in Azure; its charges outlined in Sable and illuminated in the colours Gules and Vert and the metals Argent and Or; the Archangel Saint Michael vested in Or, unlike others who appear in Argent; his emerald simplified into an area enameled Vert; and the whole emblem has a lightly beaten metal finish.

Due to its special characteristics, the difficulty in complying with the first rule of heraldry concerning metals and colours, and out of prudence, I categorize it as an emblem rather than a shield.

In a relief of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Estella, Saint Michael can be seen fighting a dragon that represents the devil, in a similar but mirrored arrangement to that of this emblem. In that relief, the Archangel Saint Michael bears a pre-heraldic shield with its umbo. According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1963], the umbo of the shield is a reinforcing element that is the predecessor of what would later become the pommelly carbuncle of the shield of the Kingdom of Navarre.
