Coat of arms of the city of Almeria, Andalusia, emblazoned by me. In 1147, during the Reconquista, the city of Almería was captured by the forces of King Alfonso VII of León, known as «the Emperor», as part of a broader crusading effort declared by Pope Eugene III. The conquest came in response to the Almohad invasion of 1146, which had begun with a landing in Algeciras and quickly seized key territories in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. In reaction, Alfonso VII negotiated an alliance with the Almoravid leader Ibn Ganiya to organize a resistance. He met with Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, and García Ramírez of Navarre, and together they planned the assault on Almería, which at the time was under Almoravid control. Crucial to the success of the operation was the support of the powerful Genoese navy, as well as French crusaders who had responded to the papal call. Subsequently, in recognition of Genoa’s decisive role in the campaign, Almería adopted as the central element of its coat of arms the Genoese emblem: «Argent, a cross Gules».

The armorial [Urfé; 15^th century] contains only blazons written in French and is not decorated with shields.

The image shows my interpretation of the arms and, beneath it, the blazon of the king of Navarre as follows «Le Roy de Navarre... de gueles à l'escarboucle d'or pommelée alumée de sinoble en la moyenne en guise d'esmeraude» which could be translated as «The King of Navarre... Gules, a carbuncle Or pommetty, illuminated Vert in the middle in the manner of an emerald».

Note that the blazon does not suggest the presence of an emerald, but that the place corresponding to the central boss of the shield, from which the rays of the carbuncle emerge, is enamelled Vert.

In the article Universitas Studiorum Navarrensis about the arms of the University of Navarre I interpret the arms of Navarre borne in profile by the Archangel Saint Michael, which, by my way of painting it, lies halfway between the carbuncle and the chains, with round chain links and long carbuncle rays, where at the centre there is no emerald, but a Vert enamel in the manner of an emerald.

Juan del Bosque, «Libro de Armería del Reino de Navarra», which is currently missing and whose subsequent copy, commissioned in 1572, is kept in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, estimated year of creation 1540.

The origin of this armorial dates back to 1527, when the Navarrese Courts requested that the Royal Council and the Chamber of Comptos ~ Chamber of Accounts and Fiscal Control, record in a book the coats of arms of the kingdom of Navarre starting with that of the king of Navarre and the houses and lineages of the so-called «ricoshombres», Almorrabides, Guebara, Aybar, Baztanes, Urroz, Lete, Subiça, Rada, Vidaurre, Qasqante, Monteagudo, and Mauleón, also including the coats of arms of other manors, houses, valleys, towns, and nobles [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 326].

According to [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; 1982; page 35] the book was compiled around the year 1540, and this is the date I use for referencing this armorial.

This first manuscript created by Juan del Bosque was taken by the royal visitor Hernán Suárez de Toledo, under the pretext of taking it to Emperor Charles V, despite being requested back by the Navarrese Courts, it was never returned and was definitively lost. The armorial that has come down to us is a recreation commissioned in 1572 [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 327].

According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1974; page 19] the recreation of this armorial was carried out based on certifications, such as those from the herald Azcárraga, and notes and partial copies of the stolen book, like the copy kept in the monastery of Leyre.

Another noteworthy bibliographic reference about this armorial, in addition to those previously mentioned, is [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 2001].

The image illustrating this bibliographic reference is the coat of arms of the king of Navarre, which I recreated based on the illustration in this armorial, on its first folio according to the numbering given to it in 1613.

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. The decision to depict both Pillars of Hercules in Argent arises from a strictly technical and artistic process. My objective was to paint the commander’s badge of the Imperial Hispanic Order of Charles V, a piece that is entirely made of Argent. Working directly on a fully Argent surface made the visual reading of the whole difficult, so I decided, as a preliminary step, to paint the coat of arms in its proper tinctures and, once the chromatic composition was resolved, to convert it into Argent. The commander’s badge of this order is based on its coat of arms and emblem as interpreted and painted by the heraldist and heraldic artist Fernando Martínez Larrañaga. In that interpretation, Fernando represented the Pillars of Hercules entirely in Argent. For the sake of coherence with this model, which is the direct reference for the badge, I followed the same solution and painted the pillars in Argent. I have also painted this same coat of arms with the pillars having Argent shafts and Or bases and capitals.

I have made this imaginary coat of arms for the Arithmetic with the following characteristics: a semicircular external shape; its enamelled field with flat color Azure and Vert inks; all the pieces are metal Or, the motto is metal Argent with Sable letters; pieces and motto are illuminated and outlined in Sable; and the whole with a very lightly beaten metal finish.

For the division operation, instead of using the piece bend sinister, 2 bezants Or in pale could have been used. However, since the bezant is a diminished piece, I preferred to use 4 pieces, one for each quarter.

Tongues out

This is a reflection on tongues protruding in animals in heraldry. I will rely on the representations in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909], which include numerous depictions of animals in a wide range of heraldic attitudes.

In heraldry, tigers [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 322–325], lions, wolves, bears, etc., are commonly shown with their tongues out. These are heraldic beasts and carnivores.

However, the fox [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 343–345] is not shown with its tongue out. It is classified as a heraldic beast and is also carnivorous.

The boar is an omnivore, a heraldic beast, and is depicted with its tongue out [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 353–358].

From this, it’s clear that having the tongue out is not uniformly associated with being a heraldic beast or being carnivorous.

On the other hand, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 446–449] classifies eagles as birds, not beasts. They are carnivorous and shown with their tongues out.

Dolphins, which are carnivorous fish, are also depicted with tongues protruding [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 479–480].

Some heraldists claim that herbivores are never shown with their tongues out.

But donkeys, mules, and especially horses —all herbivores— can indeed be shown with tongues out. For example, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 360 and 362] depict horses with tongues out, though figure 361, where the horse is running, does not. In no case are horses classified as heraldic beasts.

[Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 368 and 370] show the talbot, the mythical heraldic dog, with its tongue out when rampant or passant, but not when standing or seated. This might suggest that a protruding tongue is related to dynamic postures. However, we saw in the previous paragraph that a running horse isn’t necessarily drawn that way.

The bull [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 375–376] is not depicted with its tongue out. Nevertheless, I do paint bulls with tongues protruding. And although bulls are herbivores, I defend the heraldic bull as one of the most beastly figures in heraldry.

Stags never appear with tongues out in any of their postures [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 379–386], nor do other cervids [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 387–390] as the roe deer of this coat of arms.

Rams, sheep, lambs, and goats also do not [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 395–403].

The badger, like the fox, is carnivorous [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 409], yet also lacks a protruding tongue.

In conclusion, a protruding tongue cannot be consistently associated with heraldic beasts or carnivores. Nor can the absence of a tongue be linked solely to herbivores or to peaceful postures. For instance, lions are always shown with tongues out, even in their calmest attitudes [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 304–309].

Ultimately, it is up to the heraldic artist to decide whether to depict the tongue, depending on what they want to express. Greater aggression, motion, or liveliness may justify a protruding tongue. As a symbol of liveliness and agility, in this case, but perhaps not in others, I paint this roe deer with its tongue hanging out.

Depending on heraldic traditions, the mantling can be of one colour doubled with a metal, or of several colours and metals. When it is decided to design it in a single colour doubled with a metal, a good rule, though not obligatory, is that the mantling be of the first colour and the first metal named in the blazon. There could be another colour or metal more relevant depending on the case, but this rule often gives good results. So in this case, applying this rule, the mantling is «Vert doubled Argent», since vert and argent are the first colour and metal named in the blazon: «Quarterly: 1 per pale: 1 Argent, a madrone tree (Arbutus unedo) Vert,...». This is the coat of arms of Abdulelah Alyahya (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), designed by Vittorio Gifra (Italy) under his instructions, revised by Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast (Netherlands) and Kevin D. Couling (United Kingdom), and emblazoned by me (Spain). The arms reflect the heritage of the Alyahya family, descendants of the ancient tribe of Beno Tamim (Altamimi) and linked to the modern origins of Saudi Arabia. These arms exemplify how modern heraldry operates on a global scale, the process involved several countries: a design originating in Italy following the instructions of the armiger in Saudi Arabia, revised by experts in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and rendered by me in Spain, it serves as an example of international collaboration within the field. This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. G0093: the coat of arms of Alessandro Giannelli and Mariana von Atzingen Gorga, of Italy, as granted by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta and emblazoned by me for this grant. In the 2^nd quarter, a trimount color Vert can be seen on a field color Gules, that is, color on color. In many heraldic traditions, a trimount color Vert should not be placed on a field color Gules. However, this is not universal; for example, the arms of Slovakia display a trimount color Azure on a field color Gules. There are other differences between heraldic traditions: in Polish heraldry, for instance, Sable is not regarded as a color but as a neutral tincture, neither metal nor color, and may therefore be placed upon color Gules. These arms, granted by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta to Alessandro Giannelli and Mariana von Atzingen Gorga, belong to an Italian marriage, and similar combinations can be found in the Italian heraldic tradition. One example is the arms of the family of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of the novel on which Luchino Visconti's film Il Gattopardo is based. The heraldic beast that gave its name to both the novel and the film is itself shown above a trimount color Vert on a field color Azure: «D'azzurro al leopardo d'oro, illeonito, sostenuto da un monte di tre cime di verde cucito». The image combines the finished painted coat of arms with a photograph showing 2 successive hand-drawn studies of the bull salient and guardant described in the blazon. Executed directly in ink on translucent tracing paper, the lower sheet preserves an earlier stage of the artwork, while the upper sheet presents a more advanced version of the same bull salient and guardant. Both belong to the development of the charge that appears in 4 quarters of this coat of arms. Above the photograph appears my painting of this coat of arms, allowing a comparison between the successive hand-drawn stages and their final heraldic interpretation. In this case, both this bull salient and guardant and the demi-bull guardant of the crest were developed taking into account the armiger’s wish that they should retain a certain stylistic continuity with an existing family representation, while still preserving my own manner of drawing and painting.

«Ricohombre», written together, currently means «title that formerly belonged to the highest nobility of Spain», [Real Academia Española; 2001].

This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. Coat of arms of Tomasz Arkadiusz Grzeszkowiak designed by Tomasz Steifer and interpreted by me in 3 approaches: 1) tricking, using abbreviations; 2) hatching, using dots and lines; and 3) plain tinctures. The Polish heraldist Tomasz Steifer was one of the creators of International Heraldry Day. This coat of arms follows the Polish heraldic tradition, you can notice the color Vert over the color Gules, and also for them the Sable is not a color, then they can place a serpent Sable over the color Vert. The origin of the Casa Troncal of the Twelve Lineages of Soria dates back to the time of the repopulation of Soria by King Alfonso I of Aragon, although some authors suggest that its origin lies in the time of King Alfonso VII or King Alfonso VIII, the latter being the monarch from whom the well-known privilege of the one hundred suits of armour derives.

Due to its special characteristics, the difficulty in complying with the first rule of heraldry concerning metals and colours, and out of prudence, I categorize it as an emblem rather than a shield.

In a relief of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Estella, Saint Michael can be seen fighting a dragon that represents the devil, in a similar but mirrored arrangement to that of this emblem. In that relief, the Archangel Saint Michael bears a pre-heraldic shield with its umbo. According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1963], the umbo of the shield is a reinforcing element that is the predecessor of what would later become the pommelly carbuncle of the shield of the Kingdom of Navarre.
