This is my process of painting an prince's crown in 4 phases, in this case a closed crown of infant of Spain. It is a classic model of this crown with the inner of the rosettes of acanthus leaves of metal Or, without gems nor pearls and with only 3 types of gems in the circle Or rubies-Gules, emerald-Sinople, diamonds-Argent and without sapphires-Azur. Unlike the closed royal crown, the crown of infant of Spain has only 4 pearl diadems, of which 3 are visible. The closed royal crown has 8 pearl diadems, of which 5 are visible.

Arms of the King interpreted as follows: the escutcheon is finished in a semi-circular arch; both the field, the lion, and the crown of the crest have been illuminated; and the ensemble has a hammered metal finish.

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

Arms of the king, as interpreted by me, as follows: the shield's shape is pointed and rounded; the field is enameled Gules; the castle is outlined in Sable; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

Coat of arms that I have organized based on a previous idea from the ANPC, in the following way: the mouth of the shield is rounded and is outlined at double my usual thickness; the whole is enamelled in gules, argent and or, illuminated, outlined in sable and with a watercolor finish; and to separate the letters of the motto a dot «·» is used at mid-height.

[Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 119 and following] dedicates its chapter 7 to «representative heraldry» and, within it, its first section to «professional heraldry», to which this coat of arms belongs according to his classification, and defines it as that which «corresponds to and reflects... all the emblems of the different professions, professional associations, societies where people with the same hobbies or pastimes are grouped». The other 3 categories that, together with «professional heraldry», make up «representative heraldry» are «industrial», «sport» and «tourism».

Personally, I follow my own heraldic classification, which follows to some extent [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975], in which the coats of arms of associations like the ANPC are classified within what I call socioeconomic heraldry.

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

• Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3^rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
• On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
• Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Ferdinand III the Saint was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. During his reign, the crowns of Castile and León were united forever. When, in 1230, Ferdinand III succeeded his father, he adopted a quarterly coat of arms, placing his mother's arms, the castle, in the 1^st and 4^th quarters, and his father's arms, the lion, in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters. His goal was likely to achieve balance between the two kingdoms and to give his coat of arms a greater sense of continuity over time compared to impaled arms. The coat of arms of Ferdinand III the Saint was the first quarterly shield in history, and the idea spread into the heraldry of Spain and other kingdoms, such as Aragon-Sicily, Brabant, England, Navarre, and Bohemia.

Coat of arms of the municipality of Candasnos, Huesca, designed by Valeriano Labara Ballestar and approved by the Government of Aragon. It has been an honor for me to emblazon this hatched version with a crown for Valeriano Labara. I have interpreted it using dots and lines, a method called hatching which was useful for black and white illustrations. For the hatching I follow Silvestre Pietrasanta (1638) and Marcus Vulson de la Colombière (1639): for metals, Or with dots and Argent with pure white; for colors, Gules with vertical lines, Azure with horizontal lines, and for some jewels in the crown, Vert with diagonal lines bendwise. The Hradec Králové Region is an administrative unit of the Czech Republic. It is located in the historical region of Bohemia. Its capital is Hradec Králové, whose Latin name is «Gradicium», hence its old name «Gradec». The letter «G» seen in both the coat of arms of the Hradec Králové Region and the coat of arms of its capital originates from this historical name. The lion rampant Anrgent, double queued and crowned in the 1^st and 4^th quarters is the symbol of Bohemia, and it also appears in the 1^st and 4^th quarters of the coat of arms of the Czech Republic. «Králové» means «of the queen» in Czech and there is a trefoiled crown in the 3^rd quarter

The origin of the cross of Calatrava in its heraldic coat of arms dates back to the year 1525 when Emperor Charles V issued several decrees from Toledo to build a convent for nuns in Jamilena. For the construction of this convent, stones from the Muslim castle, which was reformed and occupied by the Order of Calatrava, were used.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

The arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain emblazoned by me. Francisco Domingo Larrosa Gil reminds me that in the original design, the pearls in the center of the crown's rosettes of acanthus leaves were always painted white, as were the pearls interspersed between these rosettes. However, recently, they have been colored azure. For instance, in the Official State Gazette, BOE of Spain, of June 21, 2014, which established the guidon and the banner of His Majesty King Felipe VI, the interior of the fleurons is colored azure, so much so that they assign it Pantone blue P-301. As we know, assigning Pantones makes no sense heraldically. In this version, I paint as pearls both those in the center of the rosettes and those interspersed between them. The definition provided by the Royal Household does not specify what lies in the center of the fleurons, which could potentially be empty; thus, the Royal Household states: «a closed crown, which is a circle of gold, with an inset of precious stones in their colours, composed of eight rosettes of acanthus leaves, of which five are visible, interspersed with pearls in their own colour, issuing from which are eight pearl diadems, of which five are visible, which converge in a blue orb, with gold semi-meridian and equator, surmounted by a gold cross, the crown lined with red», in my blazon, I limit myself to defining it as a closed royal crown.

The Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain was founded under the name «Asociación de Hidalgos, Infanzones y Noblezas a Fuero de España» by Vicente and Francisco de Cadenas y Vicent, the Marquises of Siete Iglesias and of Zayas, and also by Valentín Dávila Jalón, Marquis of Dávila.

This association brings together nobles of Spanish lineages with the aim of maintaining and promoting the traditional values of the hidalguía and is inspired by the principles of Christian humanism. It fulfills its duty to provide services to Spain, its institutions and its citizens, with loyalty to the Crown and commitment to Spanish culture and history.

Its magazine Hidalgos, also known as «La Gacetilla de Hidalgos de España», or simply «La Gacetilla», as this was its name until the end of 2010, precisely until its issue 524 of October, November and December 2010. This magazine is an excellent source of knowledge and information, and some of its articles are cited throughout Blason.es, for example, those by [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b], [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2010] and [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2012b].

In saltire arrangements, I prefer to place the element in bend over the element in bend sinister, since the bend takes precedence over the bend sinister. Therefore, in my interpretation of this coat of arms and unlike other interpretations, the two-handed sword placed in bend is drawn above the one placed in bend sinister.

Interpretation made from the Royal Academy emblem: transforming it into a semicircular-based shield, instead of its oval shape; with its motto on a scroll beneath the base, instead of surrounding it; keeping the closed royal crown in its place; with everything illuminated except the field which is in plain color; and the whole outlined in sable and with a parchment-like finish.

In this interpretation, on the Argent field, the Gules fire of the bonfire completely surrounds the Argent crucible, to avoid the metal Argent on the same.

To write the blazon for this coat of arms I use the heraldic term «llameante». Therefore, I do not follow [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 82 and figure 163] when he writes «...y un Fénix de gules sobre una hoguera encendida de lo mismo.». He uses this example to illustrate the 2 fundamental uses of the term «encendido» which is said when «the Eyes of animals... are of a different color» and «also of a burning Bush and the same for a Torch, when the flame is of a different tincture».

First publication of my interpretation of the arms of Sebastián González Montenegro, on the blog Twelve Lineages of Soria in an article entitled Coats of arms of Mr. Sebastián González Montenegro, works by Mr. Antonio Salmerón Cabañas.

Second publication of my interpretation of the arms of Sebastián González Montenegro, on the blog Twelve Lineages of Soria including his insignias of the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing and of the National Monarchist Brotherhood of Spain.

The first publication is from March 29 and the second publication is later, from May 14.

In the first quarter of the inescutcheon of this coat of arms there is «a bend Or engouled by two dragon heads of the same, issuing from the corners» following the blazon structure of [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 84], although it can also be blazoned more briefly as «a bend Or engouled by dragons».

The attribute engouled is used for «bends, crosses, saltires, and all other ordinaries, whose ends are in the mouths of lions, leopards, or dragons» according to [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 83]. It is a word of French origin meaning to swallow or to engulf, that is, the beasts are devouring the ordinary.

It was founded in New Orleans, state of Louisiana, in the year 1972 and, subsequently, was legally structured as a non-profit association in the state of Alabama.

R0038 and R0039: the coats of arms of Alessandra and Vittoria Pompili, of Italy, as registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta and emblazoned by me for these registers. These arms have been included in the book [Gauci, C. A.; Cassar, R. M.; 2025; pages 180-181] as shown in the photograph of the image, each on a page. In some Italian and Maltese arms registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, two coronets are displayed: the coronet placed directly above the shield represents the armiger’s personal rank or status, while the upper coronet represents the higher noble rank of the family line. In the case of two daughters of a baron, each may bear above her shield the coronet corresponding to her personal status as a noble, while above it is displayed the baronial coronet representing the rank of her father and of the family line.

This bibliographic reference is illustrated with one of my interpretations of the emblem of the Real Academia Española. It is an oval emblem in Argent, with its crucible, also in Argent, over a bonfire of Gules and Or and surrounded by its flames, surmounted by a closed Royal crown with 8 arches, 5 of which are visible, and its motto, as originally written «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor», around it.
