The coat of arms of the Strategy Department of Consultoria.IO designed by Ignacio Perez de Bartolome and me and emblazoned by me. Consultoria.IO is a consulting firm specialized in scale-up e-commerce stores.

Design rationale

Teamwork navigating towards a common goal (lymphad with sail and oars), keeping trade secrets (book with clasps), and solidity in support and growth (linden). The motto «Ubi concordia ibi victoria» means «Where there is unity, there is victory». It conveys the idea that success arises from harmony and collaboration between the team and its clients, working together toward shared goals.

Escudo de plata, una cruz de Alcántara. Timbrado de una corona real cerrada. Lema: «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol».

Coat of arms interpreted in the following manner: the shape of the shield is of a semicircular arch; the field is illuminated in metal Argent; the cross of Alcantara is outlined in Sable and illuminated in Vert; the royal crown is closed, outlined in Sable and illuminated with the metal Or, Argent for the pearls, Azure and Or for the orb, Gules and Vert for the gems, Gules for the inner cloth, and Sable for the visible hollow at its base; and the whole has a slightly hammered metal finish.

Regiment's Motto

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

  • Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
  • On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
  • Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Regimental Motto

The Latin motto «In hoc signo vinces» is translated as «In this sign, you shall conquer».

Coat of arms interpreted by me, highlighted with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with a semi-circular outer contour and with a iridescent finishing.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain emblazoned by me. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Arms designed by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a semi-circular external shape and with a leather finish.

Design rationale

Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life. The falcon that surmounts the helm as a crest represents sharpness and vigilance.

Coat of arms depicted by me, highlighted with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with a semi-circular external shape and with a leather finish.

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

The coat of arms of Maximilian Silvestri emblazoned by me. In Castilian, I prefer to use the term «almirez» instead of «mortero», as the latter can also refer to a weapon or even a type of cap in heraldic terminology. The word «almirez» has a unique meaning and comes from the Hispano-Arabic «almihrás» or «almihráz», which derives from Classical Arabic «mihras».

Coat of arms devised by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with an ogee external shape and with a leather finishing.

Design rationale

The oak tree laden with acorns Or in the first quarter symbolizes the family's fertility. The oak and the domed tower in the second quarter, in their transformed forms, are elements from the coat of arms of the Simon lineage, which they represent. The third quarter derives from the arms of the Faus family and represents it. The plain cross in the fourth quarter is a symbol of Christ and of Aragon. The Latin motto reads: «Strong as Iron».

Escudo de sable, un puente de cuatro ojos de oro, mazonado de sable, moviente de los flancos, sostenido por tres burelas ondadas de oro. Lema: «Patiens Quia Aeternus».

Coat of arms devised by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a pointed external shape and with a rough finishing.

Design rationale

The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The motto «Patiens quia aeternus» ~ «Patient because eternal» comes from Augustine of Hippo and reinforces the meaning of this coat of arms.

Arms depicted by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a pointed outer contour and with a rough finishing.

Coat of arms of Jason Landers Northam from Illinois, emblazoned by me. The «cabrio» is «chevron». The Diccionario de la Lengua Española, [Real Academia Española; 2014], in the 3rd definition of «cabrio», states: «m. Heráld. Honourable ordinary, in the form of a half saltire, whose point extends to the center of the chief and appears as an open compass». It gives as a synonym «chebrón», which interestingly is spelled with «b», although it is also accepted with «v», that is, «chevrón», and the definition of «chebron (chevron)» refers back to «cabrio», considering «cabrio» the main term. For this reason I use «cabrio» instead of «chevrón», just as I use «sotuer», see the definition of «chevron» as a half «sotuer», instead of «aspa». In English the term «chevron» is used, and for its diminished version «chevronel», while in Spanish the heraldic term for the diminished version is «tenaza». In English the same root is used for «chevron» and its diminished version «chevronel», while in Spanish «cabrio» and «tenaza» have different origins, the latter visually referring to the tool for gripping and cutting that bears the same name.

Arms designed by me, highlighted with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a pointed external shape and with a leather finish.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

Arms designed by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with a semi-circular outer contour and with a watercolor finish.

Design rationale

In Spanish heraldry, the use of bordures is often a matter of personal preference, in this case, the tinctures and charges on this bordure compony are a proud emblem of the bearer's origins from Utrera, Seville, the white represents the local architecture, the green symbolizes the olive groves, and the bull's head denotes Utrera as the cradle of the brave bull, a reference, along with the castle, to the arms of his town. The Latin motto tells us, «Honor and Truth Always at the Forefront».

Existing coat of arms which I have interpreted with: its semicircular (round) base; its 2 fields enameled in plain tinctures Azure and Argent; its saltire with the traditional dimensions of 1/3 of the width of the shield, that is, the width of a bend; its figures outlined in Sable and illuminated in Argent and Azure; its illuminated motto; and the ensemble in lightly beaten metal.

Contourné ~ Contornado

There are authors who limit the use of the term contornado to turned heads that look to the sinister side of the shield. However, here I use contornado in a more general way, following [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 61] who defines it as «contornados se dice de los animales ú de las cabezas de ellos, vueltos á la siniestra del Escudo».

There is another more specific use of the term contornado for the crescent moon: «bueltos se dice de los Crecientes que miran á el lado derecho del Escudo, porque mirando á el siniestro se dice contornados», [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 52].

In English, the equivalent term that I have most frequently seen is «contourné», which comes from French.

Lema: «Amor Non Timet» de sable, con letras iniciales de gules, sobre una filacteria de plata.

Coat of arms devised by me, highlighted with lights and shadows, outlined in Sable, with a semi-circular outer contour and with a leather finishing.

Design rationale

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. The tinctures of Vert, Argent and Gules, shown in the port and windows of the castle, are also a hint to where they spent their honeymoon. The language of the motto, Latin, was chosen to represent the shared Latin heritage of the couple. The meaning of the motto «Amor Non Timet» is a powerful statement in itself and represents the strength of the commitment, the love and bond shared between them.

Painted by me with a metalwork finish, with an oval shape.

The Royal Spanish Academy was founded in 1713 on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, eighth Marquess of Villena and Duke of Escalona, with the aim of «fixing the words and vocabulary of the Castilian language in its greatest propriety, elegance, and purity». A year later, in 1714, its creation was approved by a Royal Decree of Philip V.

To symbolize its purpose, its emblem with a crucible to the fire and its motto «Limpia, fija y da esplendor» [Zamora Vicente, A.; 1999] were chosen by secret ballot. In some old versions of this emblem the motto can be read with the term «fixa» and a comma before the conjunction, that is, «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor».

This article is illustrated with my personal interpretation of this emblem of the Royal Spanish Academy, crested with a closed royal crown of 8 arches, of which the 5 frontal ones are completely visible.

In this, as in any of my works, I always consult its dictionaries, almost as much, as the most interesting and specific works on the subject of study.

Heraldic device designed by me, illuminated with lights and shadows, contoured in Sable, with a semi-circular external shape and with a sealed finishing.

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed, emblazoned, and sealed by me.

Design rationale

The creation of these arms has been guided by Kevin Larkin's life journey, connecting Ballinasloe, Dublin, London, and Alicante. Drawing inspiration from the heraldry of Ballinasloe, the armiger's hometown, and Alicante, his current residence, the design reflects significant elements from both places. Ballinasloe's arms feature a triple-towered castle, symbolizing the O Ceallaigh's historic stronghold and the area's legal traditions. Similarly, Alicante's arms prominently display a triple-towered castle, making it a natural unifying element for the design. The wavy lines represent the River Suck and River Shannon in Ireland above, and the Mediterranean Sea below. Adopting a traditional Spanish style for the arms aligns with Mr. Larkin's life in Spain, embracing its rich heraldic heritage and distinctive artistic symbolism.

The official blazon of this coat of arms is «Quarterly Azure and Gules a lion’s face crowned with an Ancient Crown Or within a tressure flory on the outer edge of the same». The following are my comments to the official blazon:

  • With «crowned» can be assumed the common default «crowned with an ancient crown».
  • With «tressure flory» can be assumed the common default «tressure flory on the outer edge».
  • I use to specify the «langued», for example Gules or Azure, because I think there is not a common default tincture for «langued» in all heraldic traditions.
  • The use of «overall» can help to understand the blazon, then I add it.
