The question is: «Does Spain have a heraldic badge similar to how the British Isles have heraldic badges? I’ve found nothing so far for Spain except the Yoke and Arrows from the Catholic Monarchs»

Spain does not have badges, national insignias, equivalent to the badges of the British Isles, and this is not an absence or a gap, but rather the result of a different historical tradition.

In England and in the Anglo-British world, the badge developed as a personal and later territorial symbol, detached from the full coat of arms and easily reproducible. In the Hispanic Monarchy, by contrast, symbolic weight almost always rested on the coat of arms and on standards, not on simplified badges.

That said, if we accept badges in a functional sense, as a simple symbol that immediately refers to Spain, then the following can be stated:

• Indeed, the yoke and the arrows is a very characteristic symbol. It originates with the Catholic Monarchs and is derived from a crossed use of the initials of their names: the yoke with the Y of Ysabel (a contemporary spelling), and the arrows ~ «Flechas» with the F of Fernando. It is also commonly interpreted as symbolizing strength (the yoke) and unity (the bundle of arrows). The Gordian knot and the yoke are associated with Ferdinand; the Yoke uses the Y of Ysabel, his wife, and the arrows ~ «Flechas» are the symbol of Ysabel, using the F of her husband Ferdinand. It is a badge based on crossed symbolism.
• Ferdinand the Catholic also used the symbol of the Gordian knot cut with a sword, derived from the legend of Alexander the Great. This emblem is sometimes represented alongside the yoke and the arrows, although it was less widely used and less central, and it does not refer to Spain as strongly as the previous symbols.
• Later, Philip the Handsome, who was married to our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, introduced the Cross of Burgundy into the Spanish monarchy. It was used on military flags, for example by the Tercios. The Cross of Burgundy refers to Spain more clearly than the Gordian knot, but less so than the yoke and the arrows.
• Following the chronological order, we can consider the two Pillars of Hercules with their motto «Plus Ultra», introduced by the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles. These two separate columns serve as the supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, and when they are joined and linked by the scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», they appear, for example, in decorations and on the coins known as «Reales de a Ocho» ~ «Spanish Dollars», which circulated across the globe and became the world monetary standard, functioning as the planet’s reserve currency during their period of predominance, occupying the position later held by the pound sterling and today by the United States dollar. These columns, interlaced with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», immediately evoke Spain, and would be the most generally accepted badge.
• Finally, outside the royal and historical sphere, any badge featuring a black fighting bull ~ «toro bravo» in a defiant or noble stance will immediately refer to Spain for whoever sees it.

Other possibilities that come to mind are the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Cross of Santiago, both associated with their respective orders of chivalry, which could also function as a badge ~ «insignia». If one had to choose between them, I would undoubtedly choose the Cross of Santiago.

In summary:

• Formally, Spain does not have a badge ~ «insignia» in the British sense.
• Historically, it did have clear dynastic insignias, such as the yoke and the arrows of the Catholic Monarchs, but today they are scarcely usable.
• Functionally, I believe that the Pillars of Hercules, with or without crowns, entirely in silver, as I personally prefer, or with silver shafts and gold bases and capitals, preferably with water at the base to enhance the symbolism of the motto and linked by a scroll bearing that motto, are the best possible answer.
• At present, a newly created insignia incorporating a fighting bull refers to Spain, from anywhere in the world, in an almost unbeatable way.

Regiment's Motto

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

• Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3^rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
• On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
• Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. The decision to depict both Pillars of Hercules in Argent arises from a strictly technical and artistic process. My objective was to paint the commander’s badge of the Imperial Hispanic Order of Charles V, a piece that is entirely made of Argent. Working directly on a fully Argent surface made the visual reading of the whole difficult, so I decided, as a preliminary step, to paint the coat of arms in its proper tinctures and, once the chromatic composition was resolved, to convert it into Argent. The commander’s badge of this order is based on its coat of arms and emblem as interpreted and painted by the heraldist and heraldic artist Fernando Martínez Larrañaga. In that interpretation, Fernando represented the Pillars of Hercules entirely in Argent. For the sake of coherence with this model, which is the direct reference for the badge, I followed the same solution and painted the pillars in Argent. I have also painted this same coat of arms with the pillars having Argent shafts and Or bases and capitals.

On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

The fox refers to the clever and resourceful character attributed to the armiger’s family. The federschwert evokes his dedication to Historical European Martial Arts, in particular the German school of Liechtenauer and the long sword. The oak leaves have a double meaning: they symbolize nature and spirituality, linked to his belonging to the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and being nine in number they allude to his Irish heritage and the legendary figure of Niall of the Nine Hostages. His ancestry includes Irish, English and German roots, the latter once again connected to the sword. The motto translates as «Clever, Caring, Witty».

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

Design rationale

The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. For the same reason, in Spanish heraldry, some García family coats of arms feature a heron, «garza» in Spanish. The motto «Sic itur ad astra» comes from Virgil's , [Virgil, P.; Century I B.C.; book IX, verse 641], where it is spoken by Apollo to Aeneas's young son Iulus, and it translates to «Thus one journeys to the stars».

This coat of arms has been created by the family, combining the tower with a turret of the ancient arms of the lineage Ormazabal of the Basque Country, but with different tinctures, with a wyvern referring to the dragon issuing from the port of a castle in the ancient arms of the lineage Lazaro of Aragon. The Latin motto "«Res non verba» means «Deeds, not words» emphasizes the importance of actions over mere words.

The Promet family are the founders and owners of Promet Restoration, a company devoted to the preservation and restoration of fine pianos, antique furniture, and historic wooden artefacts, prometrestoration.com. Their tradition began in 1983 at the National Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, under the mentorship of Ülo Ots, son of the renowned opera singer Georg Ots. Founded in San Francisco in 1989 and later established in Seattle, Promet Restoration has since restored more than four hundred Steinway pianos and countless heirloom pieces. The company’s mission «To preserve the heirlooms for generations to come» embodies both artistic integrity and respect for craftsmanship. The arms combine Estonian heraldic inspiration with the form of dovetail joints, a symbol of precision and enduring workmanship, as used in the crafting of pianos and fine furniture. In this case, my way of drafting the blazon in English and in Castilian is not exactly the same. In English, when a tincture is specified after several charges or ordinaries that have not yet been assigned one, that tincture applies to all the preceding elements concerned; here, Or applies both to the bend sinister and to the inescutcheon. In Castilian, on the other hand, I do not need to state expressly that the inescutcheon lies over the bend sinister. The bend sinister crosses the centre of the shield, while the inescutcheon, approximately one third of the width of the field, is itself placed centrally. A heraldic artist will therefore understand that the inescutcheon necessarily lies over the bend sinister. By its size and position, it cannot cover the triangle or the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which are placed in base. In the blazon, I specify in square brackets the origin of each part of the arms. In this case, the two halves have different origins: the dexter half is familial, indicated as «[for Adriaensen]», while the sinister half derives from a specific grant, indicated as «[granted by Bourbon-Parma]». I usually do not blazon standards; I only describe their structure, since the coat of arms, the badge, and the crest they normally bear are already known as those of the armiger. However, in this case I have blazoned the standard with details from the hoist to the fly. The hoist is the part attached to the mast, and the fly is the part that waves freely and in this case ends in a swallow-tail, although this is an artistic detail I have not blazoned. For the specification of this blazon I use brackets for each of the parts, for example, the blazon of the arms, the blazon of the badge, or the blazon of the crest. In this case I have repeated the blazon of the second occurrence of the badge, but I could have avoided it by referring back to the first. It is unusual to find such a detailed specification of a standard. Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life.

Design rationale

These arms were created for the descendants of Christopher Joseph Parnell Brady and Estella Amelia Arigho. The design is rooted in the traditional Brady Arms, including those recorded by the Ulster King of Arms in Dublin, while the hound’s head draws inspiration from the Arms of Caneggio, the Swiss municipality where the Arigho family originates, represented as Azure with a brach hound’s head couped Argent, but with the tinctures exchanged, painting Azure where it was Argent and vice versa. The number three holds dual significance. On the Brady side, it represents three generations tracing back to the Drumlins of County Cavan, those characteristic rounded hills of the Irish landscape. On the Arigho side, it symbolizes three generations leading to the Alps, represented by the chevron Argent over a Sable field, evoking the snow-capped peaks of the mountains, a nod to the family's Swiss heritage.

In Spanish heraldry, the use of bordures is often a matter of personal preference, in this case, the tinctures and charges on this bordure compony are a proud emblem of the bearer's origins from Utrera, Seville, the white represents the local architecture, the green symbolizes the olive groves, and the bull's head denotes Utrera as the cradle of the brave bull, a reference, along with the castle, to the arms of his town. The Latin motto tells us, «Honor and Truth Always at the Forefront».

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Similarly, in a party field, both quarters can be of the same type, either color or metal, making this design heraldically correct.

In English heraldry the term caboshed applies to the head of any animal shown affronty, but it always refers only to the head, with no part of the neck visible; for example, one may blazon «a bull’s head caboshed» or «a wolf’s head caboshed», whereas if the neck is shown the proper term is «a bull’s head couped affronty»; in other words, a head caboshed does not show any of the neck, it is just the animal’s face; this usage of caboshed is valid both for horned animals such as the stag, the goat, or the bull, and also for hornless animals such as the wolf; in Castilian heraldry, however, [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 2002] defines «reencuentro» specifically for the frontal head of the bull, and by extension for other horned animals such as the stag or the goat; thus, for a wolf, one should properly blazon simply «una cabeza de lobo de frente» ~ «a wolf’s head affronty»; finally, the [Real Academia Española; 2014] standardizes the spelling «reencuentro» with double «e», although it also accepts the shorter variant «rencuentro», which is the one I personally prefer to use. I have interpreted the coats of arms of the County of Cheshire produced by Martin Goldstraw with my own style, but I wished to preserve part of his in 2 of his most characteristic elements:

• his beautiful garbs ~ gavillas de trigo, which characterise the heraldry of the region and are present in the arms of this county, and
• his distinctive chevron, with a wider angle than the considered standard, almost necessary to leave space for the charges in many of the Cheshire shields.

Among the possible options of motto, device, mote and battle cry I have decided to classify «Ab Initio Goostrey» as a mote because it is not easy to understand without prior explanation. Martin Goldstraw's own biography provides this explanation when he states that his «interest in the heraldry of the County of Cheshire began when it became apparent that the origins of the surname Goldstraw lie in the surname of Goostrey». Goostrey is a small village in the county of Cheshire, of about 2,000 inhabitants, that was already a human settlement in the first millennium BC.

This photograph shows my hand-drawn Nordic scroll alongside the coat of arms in which it is used as a external decoration. The scroll was drawn directly in ink on tracing paper using a fine technical pen and long, continuous strokes, without any preliminary pencil sketch, repeating the design as many times as necessary until the desired result was achieved. The image shows an initial tracing on tracing paper with a second, more refined tracing superimposed over it; this version was later refined a third time digitally, as can be seen in the final rendering of the complete coat of arms.

Coat of arms of the RIAG interpreted as follows: with a semicircular (round) base; the field in plain Argent enamel; the chief illuminated in Sable with its elephant illuminated in the same Sable; the narrow cross outlined in Sable and illuminated in Gules; the 4 stars outlined in Sable and illuminated in Azure; the motto illuminated in Argent, outlined and written in Sable; and the whole executed in parchment.

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; página 277] simply calls «estrecha» the narrow cross and defines it as «una Cruz disminuida de la mitad de su anchura regular, y su forma es la de la figura ordinaria», that is, if the cross width is 1/3 of the shield base width, the narrow cross width is 1/6 of the shield base width. He also recounts that the origin of the narrow cross is attributed to Mathieu de Montmoranci who «mudando la Cruz blanca, y quatro Aguiletas, que traían sus predecesores, en la Cruz roxa con diez y seis, se llamó Cruz estrecha por algunos, porque habiendo de dar lugar á las diez y seis Aguiletas, fué preciso estrechar la Cruz; pues de lo contrario no habría bastante capacidad para las otras figuras, y por eso le quedó este nombre». The width I have used in this interpretation of the coat of arms of Registro Internacional de Armas Gentilicias is slightly less than 1/6 of the shield to balance its widening at the ends as it is a narrow patty cross.

This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. The motto over the coat of arms, «Oruganda Rw'Abahinda», means "Clan of Abahinda", and the motto below, «Abazira Nkyende», states that their totemic animal is the monkey. This coat of arms was renewed by the Clan under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and I have had the honour of refining and rendering its design. Harmonising the European rules of heraldry with African expressiveness is no easy task, yet it can yield great results.

The Royal Spanish Academy was founded in 1713 on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, eighth Marquess of Villena and Duke of Escalona, with the aim of «fixing the words and vocabulary of the Castilian language in its greatest propriety, elegance, and purity». A year later, in 1714, its creation was approved by a Royal Decree of Philip V.

To symbolize its purpose, its emblem with a crucible to the fire and its motto «Limpia, fija y da esplendor» [Zamora Vicente, A.; 1999] were chosen by secret ballot. In some old versions of this emblem the motto can be read with the term «fixa» and a comma before the conjunction, that is, «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor».

This article is illustrated with my personal interpretation of this emblem of the Royal Spanish Academy, crested with a closed royal crown of 8 arches, of which the 5 frontal ones are completely visible.

In this, as in any of my works, I always consult its dictionaries, almost as much, as the most interesting and specific works on the subject of study.
