Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. The decision to depict both Pillars of Hercules in Argent arises from a strictly technical and artistic process. My objective was to paint the commander’s badge of the Imperial Hispanic Order of Charles V, a piece that is entirely made of Argent. Working directly on a fully Argent surface made the visual reading of the whole difficult, so I decided, as a preliminary step, to paint the coat of arms in its proper tinctures and, once the chromatic composition was resolved, to convert it into Argent. The commander’s badge of this order is based on its coat of arms and emblem as interpreted and painted by the heraldist and heraldic artist Fernando Martínez Larrañaga. In that interpretation, Fernando represented the Pillars of Hercules entirely in Argent. For the sake of coherence with this model, which is the direct reference for the badge, I followed the same solution and painted the pillars in Argent. I have also painted this same coat of arms with the pillars having Argent shafts and Or bases and capitals.

All are ordinaries, including the three bands and the fess, and since the blazon specifies that the fess is overall on the bands, therefore, it is not the Gules bands that are overall on the Azure fess, and they should be painted underneath.

I have made this imaginary coat of arms for the Arithmetic with the following characteristics: a semicircular external shape; its enamelled field with flat color Azure and Vert inks; all the pieces are metal Or, the motto is metal Argent with Sable letters; pieces and motto are illuminated and outlined in Sable; and the whole with a very lightly beaten metal finish.

For the division operation, instead of using the piece bend sinister, 2 bezants Or in pale could have been used. However, since the bezant is a diminished piece, I preferred to use 4 pieces, one for each quarter.

Design ideas

The heraldic art often involves resolving design challenges while maintaining both aesthetic balance and adherence to tradition. The coat of arms illustrated here draws inspiration from the Dethick-Dethicke family arms of Derbyshire, though it features distinct differences. This design explores the placement of water-bougets, a medieval water vessel, in a 2+2 arrangement, with a fess vair.

One key consideration when arranging charges in heraldry is proportionality. In this case, the fess occupies 1/3 of the coat of arms's width and is positioned 1/3 of the height from the chief, rather than at the exact center, allowing the charges to balance harmoniously. The shape of the shield itself also plays a role: rounded shields can accommodate a 2+2 arrangement more comfortably than shields with a pointed base, which are better suited to 2+1 arrangements, this is de case of Dethick's arms.

Another challenge in heraldic design is asymmetry. To address the natural curves of the shield, the water-bougets may vary slightly in size or placement. This intentional asymmetry can help create a visually appealing composition that respects both tradition and the unique constraints of each design, because, heraldry is not only about rules but also about creativity.

Water-bouget

In German, they are called «Wasserschlauch» in English «water-bougets» or «oges», and in French «bouses» or «chantepleures».

There is no specific heraldic term for them in Castilian. Based on «chantepleures», one could use «cantimploras», which are metallic or at least rigid. On the other hand, «oges» could translate as «odres», as they are typically made of leather as in this case. Additionally, since «water-bouget» are designed as a pair to be carried by a donkey or other animal, I have decided to use «par de odres» to convey the idea of one on each side of the animal.

In English, when there is a single charge, that is, a pair of water vessels, it is written in singular as «water-bouget», as can be seen in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 551]. [Friar, S.; 1987; page 68] defines «bouget» as «...a stylized representation of a yoke supporting two leather waterbags».

You can change one charge by another one, but only once.

For example, if you change «Sable, a Bend Argent» by «Sable, a Pale Argent», then the Pommes can arrive to «Or» blazon. However, this is not a solution, because the Hurts cannot walk to «Argent» blazon.

Design rationale

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. The tinctures of Vert, Argent and Gules, shown in the port and windows of the castle, are also a hint to where they spent their honeymoon. The language of the motto, Latin, was chosen to represent the shared Latin heritage of the couple. The meaning of the motto «Amor Non Timet» is a powerful statement in itself and represents the strength of the commitment, the love and bond shared between them.

The ancient arms of the family Tamburelli, Lords of Pietra Gravina, as used by Don Eugenio Ugo Augusto Tamburelli, emblazoned by me. These arms have been requested by Andrea Tamburelli Lanzara di Pietragavina. There are heraldists who consider the chief to be an ordinary, and therefore a metal chief on a metal field violates the rule of tincture, which prohibits metal on metal, I share this view. Others understand the chief as a division of the field, and thus a metal chief may appear next to a metal field without breaking the rule. For this reason, in these cases, I use the term «cousu» not as a heraldic attribute or a justification, but rather as a signal that, depending on whether the chief is seen as an ordinary or a field division, this arrangement may or may not be problematic. It also serves to show that I am fully aware of the issue. In Italy, and this is an Italian coat of arms, there are numerous arms with an eagle displayed Sable over a chief Or, which clearly corresponds to the imperial arms, «Or, an eagle displayed Sable». These chiefs have their origin in the Guelph and Ghibelline conflicts, the papacy against the empire, with the Ghibellines, supporters of the Holy Roman Empire, frequently adopting the so-called «capo dell'Impero», a chief Or with an eagle Sable, as a symbol of their allegiance to the Emperor. Many of these «capo dell'Impero» resulted metal on metal.

Coat of arms of the Tercio Great Captain, 1^st of the Spanish Legion, emblazoned by me in 12 steps. The inescutcheon represents the coat of arms of Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, 1453-1515, «The Great Captain». To paint the coat of arms of the Tercio Gran Capitán, I applied a geometric method that involves dividing both the width and the height of the shield into three equal parts. This way, the central inescutcheon, bearing the arms of Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, occupies exactly one third of the width and one third of the height of the main shield. Beyond its compositional function, this method also serves as a symbolic nod to the name of this historic military unit. The shield of the Tercio has been quite literally built using thirds. It is a small play on words and shapes that combines geometry with heraldic tradition.
