Juan del Bosque, «Libro de Armería del Reino de Navarra», which is currently missing and whose subsequent copy, commissioned in 1572, is kept in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, estimated year of creation 1540.

The origin of this armorial dates back to 1527, when the Navarrese Courts requested that the Royal Council and the Chamber of Comptos ~ Chamber of Accounts and Fiscal Control, record in a book the coats of arms of the kingdom of Navarre starting with that of the king of Navarre and the houses and lineages of the so-called «ricoshombres», Almorrabides, Guebara, Aybar, Baztanes, Urroz, Lete, Subiça, Rada, Vidaurre, Qasqante, Monteagudo, and Mauleón, also including the coats of arms of other manors, houses, valleys, towns, and nobles [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 326].

According to [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; 1982; page 35] the book was compiled around the year 1540, and this is the date I use for referencing this armorial.

This first manuscript created by Juan del Bosque was taken by the royal visitor Hernán Suárez de Toledo, under the pretext of taking it to Emperor Charles V, despite being requested back by the Navarrese Courts, it was never returned and was definitively lost. The armorial that has come down to us is a recreation commissioned in 1572 [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 327].

According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1974; page 19] the recreation of this armorial was carried out based on certifications, such as those from the herald Azcárraga, and notes and partial copies of the stolen book, like the copy kept in the monastery of Leyre.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. The decision to depict both Pillars of Hercules in Argent arises from a strictly technical and artistic process. My objective was to paint the commander’s badge of the Imperial Hispanic Order of Charles V, a piece that is entirely made of Argent. Working directly on a fully Argent surface made the visual reading of the whole difficult, so I decided, as a preliminary step, to paint the coat of arms in its proper tinctures and, once the chromatic composition was resolved, to convert it into Argent. The commander’s badge of this order is based on its coat of arms and emblem as interpreted and painted by the heraldist and heraldic artist Fernando Martínez Larrañaga. In that interpretation, Fernando represented the Pillars of Hercules entirely in Argent. For the sake of coherence with this model, which is the direct reference for the badge, I followed the same solution and painted the pillars in Argent. I have also painted this same coat of arms with the pillars having Argent shafts and Or bases and capitals.

Design rationale

The arms of «de la Rica» lineage from the Principality of Asturias, Spain, is: «Quarterly: 1 and 4 Or, a cross flory Gules; 2 and 3 Azure, a crescent Argent». Then we made a new design, not quarterly, based on these two figures: the cross flory Gules and the crescent Argent, along with Or for the field and Gules for the chevron, not using Azure to reduce the number of colors. This new blazon for Nick Rica is: «Or, on a chevron between three crosses flory Gules three crescents Argent».

Historical origin

The coat of arms of Jean-Philippe Sendat reflects his lineage, tradition, and family symbolism, as described below.

His family coat of arms dates back to 1667 and is associated with the former Barony of Sendat. This coat of arms includes lions quartered in the style of Castile and León, and, as a crest, a lion.

The 6 scallop shells, pilgrim's shells, represent the connection to the Camino de Santiago, as pilgrims were hosted in the family castle.

He was the second son of King Henry III of England, and took part in the Ninth Crusade, hence the epithet «Cross on the back».

The label is an honourable ordinary and also «a kind of mark of cadency, and the most noble of all those used to differentiate the Arms of the younger sons of a House» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 248] and it can likewise be used by the eldest son while his father's arms are still in use, ceasing to bear the label when he inherits his father’s coat. When both the eldest and the second son bear a label, the latter’s label then has more points or is charged with figures to distinguish it.

The label is constructed with «a fillet, which is one-ninth of the width of the chief, with three pendants in the form of carpentry wedges or ill-shaped triangles, joined to it without any line of separation, falling twice as far as the fillet is wide, two placed at the ends and one in the middle, its usual position being in the centre of the chief’s length, without reaching the edges of the shield» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 248].

Randy's other son, Britania, and his two daughters, Korÿn and Konstänz, as well as his grandchildren, use Randy's arms, each with their own marks of difference. Kimberly's other daughter, Makayla, her son Corey, and their descendants are not presented as inheriting arms by right under British rules, but rather by family courtesy and internal consistency within the assumed system used by this family; that is, they bear Randy's arms quartered with Kimberly's arms, each again with their own marks of difference. In the United States of America, where arms are commonly assumed, as in Castilian heraldic tradition, rather than formally granted, such arrangements are a matter of family tradition, agreement, and personal decision, rather than enforceable heraldic law. The overall composition of the arms of this extended family is a clear and good example of this approach. It should be noted that the English expression «assumption of arms» does not translate well into Castilian as «asunción de armas», but rather as «adopción de armas», «adoption of arms» a much more accurate and meaningful term. The concept of adoption conveys incorporation into a family: we adopt fundamental bonds, such as a child; deeply personal relationships, such as a companion animal; and also highly symbolic and identity-defining elements, such as a coat of arms.

Annulet

The circular crown when it is large and in the middle of the shield [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975] is called an annulet. [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 296 and 297] calls it annulet or small annulet depending on its size, if it is large an annulet and if it is small a small annulet. In English and French heraldry it is called «cyclamor» and hence the expression «cyclamor annulet» can also be found.

This annulet is my aesthetic contribution to this imaginary coat of arms as it is normally not represented with this annulet.

Bordure and Orle

In other interpretations the words «non est» go on a bordure or on an orle, the latter being the case blazoned, for example, [Husenbeth, F. C.; 1882; 2^nd appendix] in the following way: «Gules, an orle and pall Argent, conjoined and surmounted of four plates, occupying the dexter and sinister chief and the base and fess points respectively; the first inscribed Pater, the second Filius, and the third Spiritus Sanctus, the centre Deus; the connecting portions of the orle between them having the words non est, and those of the pall est».

The way to elaborate a label can be found in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 248] who writes that «it is made of a fillet, which is the ninth part of the latitude of the Chief with three points in the form of a Carpenter's wedge, or of badly formed triangles, which united to it without separation of lines, fall twice as much, as the fillet is wide, the two being placed at its ends, and one in its middle, its ordinary situation being in the middle of the length of the Chief itself, without reaching the edges of the Shield».

In [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 248 and 249] it is said that «the simple Label is always of three points», as is the case at hand, «but having 4, 5, or 6, which is the greatest number found, it is necessary to specify it», although in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 114] he seems to consider that the maximum is five as he writes «Points, it is said of three, four and up to five points of the Labels».

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

The arms are traditionally associated with the Lobo family of Alvito and are documented in Castilian and Portuguese heraldic and genealogical sources. The House of Noronha originated with Alfonso Enríquez of Castile, Count of Noreña and Gijón, the natural son of King Henry II of Castile, founder of the Trastámara dynasty, and of Elvira Íñiguez. The lineage became linked to the Portuguese Royal House through the marriage of Alfonso Enríquez to Isabel of Portugal, the natural daughter of King Ferdinand I of Portugal, an alliance arranged in the context of the Treaty of Santarém of 1373, which brought an end to the Fernandine Wars, during which Ferdinand I of Portugal confronted the kings of the House of Trastámara over the throne of Castile following the murder of Peter I at the hands of his half-brother Henry. This is the coat of arms of Sister Esperanza Vega Lanzagorta, designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallin and outlined by me. These arms have a representation of Our Lady of Mercy, celebrated on September 24^th. To identify Our Lady of Mercy, I chose two primary symbols: 1) The arms of the Order of Mercy on her chest, «per fess, 1 Gules, a cross patty Argent, and 2 Or, four pallets Gules», and 2) the broken chains, symbolizing the redemption of captives, remember that the complete name of the order is the Royal, Celestial, and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy and the Redemption of the Captives.

In heraldry, there are two types of tigers with specific names in both English and Castilian: the «tyger» in English I call «tigre heráldico» in Castilian, and the «tiger» in English I refer to as «tigre» in Castilian, omitting the Bengal qualifier that some authors use for the natural tiger. According to [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; page 191, figures 322-325], the differences between these two representations are significant. The «tyger», or «tigre heráldico», is a fantastical animal, created from the imagination of medieval artists who were unfamiliar with the real animal but knew of its existence through distant descriptions. This heraldic tyger has a body resembling that of the natural tiger, but with a mane like that of a lion, a tufted tail, and a peculiar head that looks more like a wolf than a natural tiger. Additionally, it lacks the characteristic stripes of the Bengal tiger. Recall that the heraldic panther is also an example of a fantastical animal, breathing fire from its nose and ears and covered in colorful spots. On the other hand, the natural «tiger», identified as the «Bengal tiger» by [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; page 191, figures 324-325], appears in heraldry later and is a more realistic depiction of the animal as it exists in nature.

Coat of arms interpreted in the following manner: the shape of the base is semicircular; the field has been enameled in Azure; the lozenges with their 4 rectangular and equal angles, are outlined in Sable and illuminated in metal Or; the lozengy is 6 lozenges wide by 7 lozenges high; the pale outlined in Sable and illuminated in Gules; the estoiles with 6 wavy rays outlined in Sable and illuminated in metal Or; and the whole with a rough finish.

The term in Castilian for the «estrellas ondadas» (wavy stars) is «Estrella» (star) alone, which, like other figures, if not blazoned, is assumed to have 5 straight rays unless another number is stated.

The English term «estoile», which is used in this blazon, as opposed to «mullet», refers to a star of 6 wavy rays ~ «six points and wavy», which in heraldry are called wavy. Sometimes, and depending on the era, these differences may not have been so clear.

Emblem interpreted by me as follows: an oval shape with proportions 5x6, wider than the original; the field illuminated in Azure; its charges outlined in Sable and illuminated in the colours Gules and Vert and the metals Argent and Or; the Archangel Saint Michael vested in Or, unlike others who appear in Argent; his emerald simplified into an area enameled Vert; and the whole emblem has a lightly beaten metal finish.

Due to its special characteristics, the difficulty in complying with the first rule of heraldry concerning metals and colours, and out of prudence, I categorize it as an emblem rather than a shield.

In a relief of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Estella, Saint Michael can be seen fighting a dragon that represents the devil, in a similar but mirrored arrangement to that of this emblem. In that relief, the Archangel Saint Michael bears a pre-heraldic shield with its umbo. According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1963], the umbo of the shield is a reinforcing element that is the predecessor of what would later become the pommelly carbuncle of the shield of the Kingdom of Navarre.

[Friar, S.; 1987; pages 156-157] says of the vair: «originates from the fur of a species of squirrel... which was popular in the Middle Ages as a lining for the garments of those not entitled to wear ermine. The animal was blue-grey on the back and white underneath. By sewing a number of these pelts together, with white and blue-grey alternating,... one which easily translated into the stylized armorial form of Vair and its variants».

[Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 2002; page 138] says that the a pile issuant from the base is «a triangle whose base issues from the base of the shield, being a third of its width», but when it is painted in [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 2002; page 268, figure 279] along with the pile the width of the base of both isosceles triangles is 2/3 of the width of the shield. I think the width of 2/3 is, in these 2 cases, better than 1/3 width, because with 1/3 there is not enough room for charges, as shown in the figure below.

There are scholars who say that the pile issuant from the base must not touch the upper edge of the shield and others that its tip should be in the center of the chief. In the previous image, the pile issuant from the base of the 1^st shield fulfills the first affirmation, and in the 2^nd shield, its tip is in the center of the chief.

I have the doubt if it should not be a saltire raguly.

The internal structure of this design is that the lion's forepaws fall below the center of the dexter heart, the central vertical axis passing through the center of the Star of David runs between the lion's eyes, and the tip of the tail falls below the center of the sinister heart.
