Juana María Domaica Maroto

Party per pale Azur and Argent: a chevron between in chief a dressage horse salient, and in base three waves of the sea all counterchanged.

Party per pale Azur and Argent: a chevron between in chief a dressage horse salient, and in base three waves of the sea all counterchanged.

Escudo partido de azur y plata: un cabrio surmontado de un caballo de doma saltante y en punta tres ondas del mar, todo del uno al otro.

Coat of arms created with the following form: a pointed base; the field, the horse, the chevron and the sea are enamelled in plain Azure and Argent; the ordinary, chevron, and the 2 charges, horse and sea, are outlined of the field; the horse, in all its representations, is evirated, although this is something I have decided not to blazon; and the shield has a rough finish.

Canting arms

There are not many examples canting arms for 2 surnames, this is an example designed by me in Castilian: a dressage horse [called in Castilian «caballo de DOMA»], and [a conjunction that in Castilian is «y», that sounds «I»] a chevron [in Castilian «CAbrio»] over a sea [in Castilian «MAR»] in 2 pieces broken [in Castilian «ROTO»]. All the previous capital letters together sound «DOMA·I·CA MAR·ROTO» and the 2 surnames of the owner are DOMAICA MAROTO.

Juana María Domaica Maroto, canting arms, explanation.

Women's arms

The arms of Juana María Domaica Maroto were presented in my lecture Women and Arms: Contemporary Coats of Arms for Women Worldwide (lecture). This presentation included her coat of arms together with the blazon text, and with its symbolism.

The blazon and the logotype

Party per pale Azur and Argent: a chevron between in chief a dressage horse salient, and in base three waves of the sea all counterchanged.

Escudo partido de azur y plata: un cabrio surmontado de un caballo de doma saltante y en punta tres ondas del mar, todo del uno al otro.

The style I have chosen to paint this version of this coat of arms is such that it could equally be used as a personal two-colour logotype. However, it must always be borne in mind that:

  • a coat of arms is the artistic representation of a blazon and a blazon is a conceptual and abstract description that allows as many interpretations as there are different artists to paint it,
  • whereas a logotype, and even more so when it corresponds to a trade mark, is a closed and rigid description of colours, dimensions, proportions, typefaces, etc. that allows only one single graphic representation, leaving no room for art or imagination.

Therefore, in the case of a logotype the art was supplied only by its original creator, the owner of the logotype permitting no art other than this and until such time as he decides to introduce changes. In contrast, the blazon and its owner allow art to flow and, in many blazons, art has flowed across the centuries.

It could therefore be said that whereas the description of a «logotype» specifies «how» it must be done, a «blazon» specifies «what» the owner wants the coat of arms to contain, leaving each artist free to choose «how» to do it.

Canting arms designating their bearer

Escudo partido de azur y plata: un cabrio surmontado de un caballo de doma saltante y en punta tres ondas del mar, todo del uno al otro. Lema: «Prosequitur deinceps».

Coat of arms created by me for Domaica Maroto with: a pointed base; its field, the chevron, the horse and the sea are enamelled in plain Azure and Argent; the horse has its tail gathered in a braid, like some Carthusian dressage horses; and all outlined in Sable and with a parchment finish.

Canting arms with a horse of «doma» «y» [and] a «ca»brio over a «mar» «roto» [broken] in two by the per-pale division, which speak of their bearer «doma-y-ca mar-roto», while their motto says «Press on».

Symbolism

The motto of the bearer is «Prosequitur deinceps», meaning «press on» over the difficulties that are symbolised by a horse salient over static obstacles, the chevron, and moving ones, the waves of the sea; the horse leaps fearlessly from light, the Argent of the 2nd quarter, to darkness, the Azure of the 1st quarter.

Lema: «Prosequitur deinceps».

Coat of arms created with the following characteristics: a pointed base; the field in plain Azure and Argent enamel; the ordinary and the 2 charges are illuminated in plain Azure and Argent and outlined in Sable; the tinctures of the dexter and sinister mantling are organised differently to contrast with the colour of the field they accompany; the wreath and the mantling are stamped with chinoiserie; in the crest the tinctures of the chevron and the horse are contrasted for greater emphasis; none of the representations of this coat of arms employ, either for its base or its ornament, traditionally feminine forms; and the whole has received a lightly beaten metal finish.

The «chinapiería» stamping, which adorns the mantling and the wreath of this helmed coat of arms, is registered as a trade mark in [Salmerón Cabañas, A.; 2009] and as intellectual property in [Salmerón Cabañas, A.; 2008].

The following have been created and illustrated: two Azure and Argent borders charged with 21 salient horses, to frame paper and documents; a coat of arms in plain tincture outlined in Sable; another watercoloured and illuminated shield, with its two charges and its ordinary, the chevron, outlined of the field tincture; another shield with mantling and wreath decorated with a special type of drawing I call chinoiserie, with crest and a beaten metal finish; and a two-colour shield, without outlining, in plain tinctures, which could be used as a logotype, with the understanding that a coat of arms always goes beyond the current concept of a logotype.

A Sable seal and an example of its printing in Azure ink have been designed and illustrated from this coat of arms. This seal has been physically made in rubber and wood with a diameter of 4 cm with the motto "Juana María Domaica Maroto".

An ex libris in Sable and an example of its printing in Azure ink have been created and illustrated. This ex libris has also been physically made in rubber and wood, with a diameter of 4 cm and with the motto "Juana María Domaica Maroto, ex libris".
