Coat of arms of Amber Martinez, California, designed by her, improved by Kevin D Couling and Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast and emblazoned by me. The motto «Miseris succurrere disco» originates from Virgil's «Aeneid», [Virgil, P.; Century I B.C.; book I, verse 630], numbered as verses 630-631 in some editions. The complete sentence is «Non ignara mali, miseris succurrere disco», commonly translated as «Not being unacquainted with suffering, I learn to help those who suffer» or «Knowing suffering myself, I have learned to come to the aid of the unfortunate». These words are spoken by Queen Dido of Carthage as she welcomes Aeneas and his shipwrecked Trojans. Offering them refuge and protection, Dido explains that she herself has experienced exile and hardship after fleeing Tyre following the murder of her husband. Her own experience of suffering has taught her compassion and empathy for those enduring misfortune, making this passage one of the most enduring literary expressions of charity, hospitality, and solidarity with people in distress.
